Blind Can See Again With Electronic Implant

A ground-breaking eye implant has allowed three blind patients to see.

Within days of being fitted with the electronic device in their retina, the German patients were able to see objects on a table, including a cup and saucer.

One was even able to read his own name.

A British eye surgeon, who will lead the first UK trials of the device next year, said it was a significant advance.

Professor Robert MacLaren, from the Oxford Eye Hospital, said: "Until now this concept would have been considered only in the realms of science fiction. What surprised all of us was just how much resolution you can get from the implant."

The device consists of an electronic plate just three millimetres square, which is coated with 1,500 light-sensitive sensors.

Each sensor triggers an electronic pulse that stimulates nerves that lead to the brain. Patients see a rough black and white image.

The device has been developed by the German technology company Retina Implant AG.

It was fitted to three patients with the inherited condition retinitis pigmentosa, which gradually destroys the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eye, causing blindness.

Details were published by the Royal Society.

First person to come to mind is Stevie Wonder, poor guy deserves to see, even if it's just a peek..

unfortunately, I don't think it may work on him...

There was a special on either the Discovery Channel, or History Channel that covered stuff like this. Not this specific procedure, but there was a lady with some huge implant behind her ear or something, with a large connector/wires coming out and she had to wear a bulky, oddly shaped pack to power it if I recall correctly.

I don't remember how she went blind, and even with this Borg-like contraption protruding from her head she could still only see "light"- no objects. I suppose she was happy that she didn't just see black? It certainly makes you realize how much most people take vision for granted.

On the history channel they had a guy doing the same thing back a few years ago. Except he would take out this lense thing in your eye (it was cloudy and nasty. which is what caused the blindness) and replace it with a plastic one. after a few days, the people could see again. It was really awesome.

When they get to chromed iris, flash compensated with an auto targeting reticule, I'll be there. :D

I've always thought they'd just add a plug on the side of your skull for a sensor mounted on the rifle itself. Eliminates all the complex math describing how to put the reticule in the correct place, and essentially lets you target right down the bore of the weapon. Also lets you fire from behind cover without sacrificing the ability to aim.

I could go a LOT further with the idea of prosthetic eyes, but there's not a whole lot of point, professional SF writers have probably already said it all, and more succinctly than my meager skills allow.
