I recently started driving my car again, and I just changed out the exhaust system for a custom one that is all stainless straight back into a Nur Spec. I know am noticing tar or black deposits building up on my back white bumper area and tail lights. I was told that a catalytic converter would do the trick as to keep these things off my bumper and from coming out of my tail pipe. Can anyone help me cure this issue, or is this the only way?

Not tar...carbon. I have this as well and attribute it to my car running rich. I also have a high flow cat so I'm not sure that just getting a cat will resolve your issues.

Even if you're not running real rich, you will get carbon deposits on the back if you dont have a cat... Thats what the cat does, it filters that stuff...

carbon on the back bumper signifies that its a man car. stop being a priss and embrace it.

x2. ;)

Rich or not, without a cat, you'll get build up eventually.
It's just A LOT easier to notice with a light colored car.

Don't drive the car.

It's most likely a rich mixture of fuel dumping out without being cleaned via a cat.

LOL "don't drive the car." :icon_razz

I get a lot of buildup on the back of my car but it all comes off easily with one wipe. It's nothing to worry about, just keep your car clean.

MKIII N00B I don't believe he's talking about a big black spot directly above the exhaust. This happens when the exhaust gas comes in direct contact with the bumper. I know, it happened to me when I was NA. With the 1jz my catback is out a bit further and this got rid of that problem.

I know, thats what im saying...Clean it and then put a plate there.

Putting a plate there won't do anything. The deposits cover most of the rear of the car, the whole bumper, and the whole back including the taillights. My GUESS is that the vaccuum the rear of the car creates while moving is what sucks these deposits to the back of the car.

carbon stains don't make a man's car.

White race gas residue in your muffler makes a man's car. :icon_surp

Thank you for the tips people. I'm trying to keep the car as clean as possible and I hate this build-up shit. But I guess it's part of the tuning territory. I will run a cat converter to help my problem. My car still needs a good tune so maybe that will help some too, but I know this can not be avoided.

spoiler causes issues like this...

my back bumber gets dirty in no time from the dust that's deposited from the spoiler doing it's job...

my exhaust is tucked in pretty well, stock cat, and I don't get much black form the exhaust itself...
