All of these blown head gaskets is nothng short of a rite of passage. Port and polish everything that you pssibley can with a dremel and some hand sanding on the alluminum. A metal HG , IMO/HKS beaded gasket. 250. Recently think I am going with the ARP bolts. Instead of studs. I am unsure as to what mm I should go with. 2mm keeps coming to mind for longevity.??? MY head is in the machine shop It is going to tally an astronomical balance I am sure. He sys he's going to have to get shims from toyota..., the STEALERSHIP.:rant2:

No reason to go MHG unless you playing with high boost. This is in the 7m-ge section so I'm guessing you are not turbo and in that case just go with a good stock gasket and arp bolts like you planning on.

True, whilst i'm not playing with high boost, i'd still rather have the best gasket thats affordable. I might go NA-T or Supercharged, or just increase the compression to 10.5:1, get some high lift cams, new valves etc ;)

You're lowering your compression ratio with a thicker headgasket unless you're getting or have gotten a bit machined off the block and/or head.

Yup, i know. However, i never said it was a thicker HG :p

This was put on in 2003 - says its a 1mm HKS gasket, made of metal, at least on the bill. Dont have the funds or tools to tear the engine apart to check that though...

Boost isn't the only thing that can blow a headgasket...corrosion (from age) and overheating will blow it too. A MHG gives you much more protection and more leeway in case you do overheat, or something else unforseen happens...NA Supras blow composite HG's too...hmm...I wonder why...

You missed one reason.

The driver is a big reason in why a head gasket blows.

I agree Kai. But......, you can drive it hard as hell and not abuse it. If you aren't under the hood everyday...., you may be neglecting your ride. These cars are fun as hell to drive. I also agree with John and Will. I know I'm going to drive this car hard. So I am building it to be able to withstand my lack of.., finess for a better word. Seriously though. WHY go through the entire BHG process and NOT replace what's lost with what your best money can afford. Dig Deep Lads, MHG's don't grow on tree's. Another Q is what mm do you want it to be. I am thinking on going with the 2.mm beaded hks. To me, this is strictly for making myself sleep at night knowing that I have a top notch MHG is priceless. ARP studs I preferr. I have just been undecided and swaying over a couple of things. Now...., all I need are the dollar bills ya'll. I know I gain a bit more umphh if I go with a 1.mm 1.5.mm
the 2.mm seems to me to be the best because IMO, The gains acrued with a thin gasket is not worth the wear and tear of my engine. I'd rather put a beefy part into her and make her work to carry it, no pun intended, than put something flimsy and light weight, making my supra seem like something it really isn't. That's the mentallity that keeps your shit broken down. Sorry for the s word Ian. Long time no a$$ chewings, LOL.

I have seriously thought about getting the toyota oem replacement. It's just that when it gets down to the wire. bottom line is metal to metal. I live in a small town..., once I get her up and running everyone will know it. They are all going to be..., oh this is the supra I have herd about being worked over about town. It's like everyone is already anticipating my getting her done. Well..., all of my gear head buddies are. Then you always have that pack of high schoolers that hang out at the car wash or the mall parking lot. I'll just roll in there one night and show them who there daddies are. Some kid in a 4 cylinder mercury cougar, kept telling me to hurry up and build my shit so he can smoke it. Alright jr. I told him I wouldn't flex on his ride it would be a waiste of gas but my old lady can run him. That's his only chance, LOL. Speaking of..., I gotta get out to the shop and sand on some things. peace.
