BHG cost estimate? What can I expect

Hi everyone, just wanted to say that Ive been using this site for a while now and you guys have great info on the mk3 supra's. I bought a dark blue 88 turbo auto back in december. This is my first supra, and I love it, but I had a bhg recently. (Not that bad, cought it early) I am contemplating going with a mhg or just a factory one. The car itself has alot of oldschool hks stuff on it. HKS VPC, PFC fcon, what looks to be a 60-1 ct26, Greddy boost controller(was set at 1.0 bar) and lots more. Im going to be going back to school shortly, so funds are going to be tight. Im really wondering what i should expect to pay a machine shop to resurface the block/head and do all the normally needed stuff. Im new to dealing with shops, So I dont really know what to expect. If it can be done for like less than 2k then I might do it. I have a engine gasket set on the way which has the OEM Head gasket. I might just resurface the head and go with that. I can do most of the mechanical parts myself, except block/ resurface work. Also I live in Phx, AZ if anyone knows a reputable shop that has worked on these motors.

I did my BHG for about $800.
I had the head machined, and I sanded the shit out of the block and smoothed it out and checked for straightness.

Replaced it with a stock "Stone" headgasket, ARP STUDS, and I also had valve seals done, and a lot of other gaskets and hoses were replaced at the same time.

quite a bit of work, but take your time and you should be ok.
Ive been driving mine at 9psi for about 16,000km, and NO problems what so ever.

Make sure once its all said and done, flush the oil a few times.. dont want ROD KNOCK!

Thanks, That helps quite a bit.

Now all i need to know is about how much should it cost to do it the other way. Really im only worried about the machine shop work.

well it cost me about the same 800, but i did a lot of stuff all at once :), MHG,arp bolts, water pump, all new gaskets, timing belt, and machining on the head, i did lots of sanding on the block.

now after 6months and 18,xxxKM im having a heating issue, so i recommend replacing coolent hoses as i didnt :(.

machining work isn't that expnesive.

I could see that, if you didnt machine the block. But I dont know if I could get away with that, dont want to take the chance of it not sealing.

I have a gasket kit question as well. It's related to this thread, not trying to hijack.

I'm looking at buying a used 7mgte and doing a stock rebuild, other than 20 over NPR piston/ring set.

For the kits I want to know what to use.

The choices I'm aware of, and choosing between are:
---------------------------------------------------

- Fel-pro
- Stone
- OEM
- ITM from partsdinosaur.com (there are two, not sure which to get, I think one is lower, other is upper and lower.

I want to go with the OEM kit since I heard it's the best and the gaskets are metal mostly (except the HG). But it's the most expensive. This wouldn't be a problem if I were doing a higher hp, or even mild hp build.

Basically the first three are my main options. I want to run the car approximately two years before I tear down and do a beefier rebuild. Otherwise I'd like to keep the motor pretty much stock, do BPU's like IC, hard pipes, rad, exhaust, intake, maybe lex/550's and upgrade to a CT26-57GT from DM. These would be done over the two years or so. The HG will be a MHG.

Ok, that's the gasket kit question. For the HG, I know it will depends on how much has been taken off, I'd have to do some measuring since I don't know if the surfaces have been shaved already, but I'd like to know if a cometic will do for what I have planned.

Reason I ask is if I should go MHG bead type like HKS, then I'll do so right now because I'm getting the block honed/bored over and decked since this will be the only time the engine will be out. Buying/building this GTE for a swap into my currently n/a supra.

When I do the rebuild I plan to go with an HKS HG, but I was wondering if I should just use one now or if I'm able to very reliably use a cometic (titan) for the mods I have in mind above. Thanks!
