Each engine truly does have its own distinctive sound. The 7m and the 2j Definitely would have a never ending battle in my book, mod for mod.

In the upper RPM band all three motors sound great. For the lower revs and idle my vote goes to the 7m. It just has a wonderfully deep rumble.

I've had both engines. Both with my custom intake manifolds, long runner tubular headers and custom no cat exhausts. They sound very similar that I can't really say which one sounds better. Muffler length and all of the above parts and their design all affect the sound. I love the way MY 2j sounds at higher rpm's, very high rpm's. Ron
