so ill be having some days off for the holidays and id like to swap my car to 5 spd, finally! but i have to work in my driveway and dont/cant spill, so for those who have done this swap what is the best way to drain all if not most of the fluid?

i was thinking of disconnecting the trans cooler line and running the engine until no more fluid comes out, what do you guys think?

thanks

I come from a land down under
Same same if you try to run it out of the cooler line, soon as the pickup uncovers it will stop pumping but you run the risk of rotational damage to parts that are normally pressure lubed.

You could keep topping it up while it's running to flush the old Oil out.

Good idea to drop the pan and replace the screen and clean the magnets while you're doing all this.

Put a glove over the tailshaft opening after you pull out the driveshaft. Keep the converter all the way in and loop the cooler circuit. Shouldn't be able to leak and fluid.

Go out in the street where you dont care about staining. Put it in reverse and punch it. When you get going at a good speed slam it into drive without taking your foot off the gas. This will drain your transmission and remove it in one easy catastrophic step!

In all seriousness, ge a large drip pan to put underneath, something that you can drop the whole trans right onto without worrying about leaking onto the driveway.

Do it some where else.......
Or put down a layer of heavy plastic, and an old blanket.

Fluid will run out of the tail shaft as soon as you pull the drive shaft,
so be prepaired for it, or..............
just have the back of the car up when you pull the drive shaft.
All the fluid will be towards the front, and won't piss out the back.
The use an old wrag forcefullu stuffed in around the tail shaft with a screw driver, plus a plastic bag around the back, before jacking up the front of the car.

Don't pull the converter out of the trans.

Then haul off the trans ASAP, and donate it to someone like a scrap yard.

^^^ haha, i drain most of it out of the drain plug. Then be prepare to catch some more when the drive shaft is pulled out. When u bought my extra trans, it came with a cut yolk portion of the drive shaft. So i just stick it in there when i need to pull the trans. Just be prepared for it to come out.

I used the drain plug, then took the pan off for a few days, pan went back on before I pulled the trans and it still leaked everywhere.

You will never get all the fluid out, put some thing down and be ready with cat litter to soak it all up. Don't forget about the radiator cooler lines, they will leak.
