Best tire size for a 17x9 rim?

I got 17 x 9 wide rims all around, whats the best size? All the local tire people have been very little help. I think I saw on the forums that a 275 40 17r is what I want, can any one confirm this or got any other info for me?

Go with 245 40 for the front and 275 for the rears.

I run 245/50-16 Goodyear Eagle F1's all the way around I picked this size for two reasons. First They were taller than stock size so I get better take offs from a stop and better MPG on the freeway. Second They have 8.4" of tread on the ground and pull the sidewalls in a bit so if I run over something on the street it can't poke a hole in my sidewalls. I see most folks run a far wider rim than the tire thus exposing the sidewall to hazards they can't handle. When I switch to 17"X8" mustang rims all the way around I will run the same tire but I 275/40-17, that will give me 9.4" of tread on the ground and .1" taller. This same size tire will fit a 9" rim but will put more sidewall toward the ground. I'm adding a link so you can see all the different size info and compare them, they even show approved rim widths for each tire size. It's a GoodYear site but the sizing info is usually the same for any tire. Get your tire prices at tirerack.com then go to your local discount tires and ask them to match the tirerack price or close to it.

255 is used instead of 275, because the 275 is taller, changing your overall gear ratio, and making the speedo inaccurate.

The factory 225/50/16 cause a the speedo to read high.

I have 275/40/17's on mine and the speedo is dead-on according to both my GPS unit and the Highway patrol lazer gun

^..not to mention slow you down due to more friction on the front wheels, its okay in the back due to the need for traction. this is why we say to run smaller tires in the front.

275/40/17 in the rear on 17x9 w/ 43mm offset.
245/45/17 in the front on 17x8 w/ 43mm offset

265/40/17 rear
245/40/17 front

That's with 17*9 rear
and 17*8 front

Um no. More meat up front = less understeer. Keep the same size all around (255 or 275 IMO) and keep the car balanced.
