if you are worried, use a lapping tool to go over both surfaces

What were you using to lap the block? Did you do it with the block out of the car?

I hear the small Sonic lapping tool is fairly easy to use and produces a good result.

I've done it with a thick piece of glass as a sanding block, and a combination of emery and polishing compounds, worked well...but it took forever.

I'm in the process of lapping the block by hand. It's flat with no measurable low spots, but I'm going for as close to mirror finish as I can get being careful not to create any low-spots.

I took the stopper out of the plastic, and lo and behold...it does have viton on it. Still haven't settled on whether to strip it off and use a thicker sealant. It all depends on how my deck looks when I'm finished. So freakin' tedious it's unbelievable. My hands and shoulders are killing me from lapping this thing.

The temptation is to say "fuck it, good enough", but I know what that attitude will get me, so off I go to the garage...sigh...ooooh yeah....

I use 2 different grades and get the job done in 20 minutes.

It's 10x faster then normal compound.

Are you doing it by hand or with pneumatic sander maybe....I'd be to afraid of messing it up with anything but by hand, although I've seen some guys that were pretty damn good with a sander.

What are you using as a sanding block? (As I recall you have access to some pretty good machinery.) I'm using a square and a rectangle of 1" thick glass. It's the flattest thing I could think of. I used it before on my friends cars and it worked really well (they're still running).

I gotta look into getting one of those..:icon_bigg. I don't recall ever seeing one for sale from the usual tool sources. The search begins...hmmm.

Everytime I have done a block prep for a mhg, I just filed it smooth using a large file and running it down the block. I have never put anything on it and I have always came out good. I haven't blowen a head gasket in years.

The best sealant is no sealant... Just a good gasket.

Not a technique I would do ;)
All MHG's have a specific RA spec...a file is not the optimum way to achieve it.

If you re-use a MHG, you need a sealer to effect the initial. As stated earlier, stripping off the old Viton and using copper spray does a good job. On a new MHG, no sealer is required and using one can damage the factory Viton coating.

Yeah, no file for me, I am not feeling lucky...

Thanks for the point in the right direction.

I'm ordering the lapping plate and paste tonight, but I was wondering what size of lapping plate I should order (obviously smaller is better on the bank card, but there is no use on getting one that's to small). Is the 8" by 8" too small for the job? Should I pop for the 18" x 12"? Big difference in price...but if I need the bigger one, I need the bigger one.

sidenote: I'm getting good at being patient:aigo:

Mine is 12x12" it just means the waves are reduced on direction changes as a small plate will tend to tip a bit as you go back and forth.

The centre handles on mine help reduce this further so you're not introducing your physiology into the job.
