- Harsher the pad, the more it's gonna wear the rotors (new cars have crazy service intervals on the brakes now, and you have to replace the rotor and pads)
- Harsh pads tend to squeel (squeeling isn't a sign of bad brakes FYI)
- Harsh pads tend to need to get heat in them to work correctly.
For a DD, stock style rotors (brembo blanks are pretty good) and OEM pads are FINE. Important things to do:
- Remove rust from hub surface where the rotor sits.
- Clean and regrease slides on calipers (make sure the boots aren't torn and that they sit where they should).
- Replace the hardware and shims.
- If the pads aren't chamfered on the leading and trailing edges, you can add it to reduce squeeling (many good pads already have this done).
- Remove paint from sides of pad material (another potential squeel)
- Make SURE you properly torque the lug nuts. Overtorque and you'll warp the rotors.
