I've always been in the habit of sliding the tires under the car when I take them off, just for the added safety, but I always use jack stands too...

just get a lift!

I use four 6 ton jack stands, the lowest setting is higher than the highest setting on most other jacks and a 4 ton hydraulic jack that lifts up to 30"

Don't mess around with safety equipment.
