I love my guinness but Im all about trying new beer lately. So, Im looking for a beer thats similar to the good old guinness. I tried a few Stouts last night and they didnt remind me of normal guinness at all. They all seemed to be like the Extra stout guinness which Im not crazy about.

So, is there any stout thats not Extra or Imperial, rather more like normal guinness?

The ones I tried were some rather hardcore stouts too ha, Old Viscosity, Big Bear Black stout and Moleys Imperial stout or something. They all were very similar to guinness extra stout, good in their own ways just not what Im looking for right now lol.

Guinness.. .meh. Not a fan of it. I'm a hop head though.

If you want a good Irish dry stout, try 3 floyds blacksun stout if you're able to get it. In fact, hit up beeradvocate.com and try any of the top irish dry stouts.

what's the point of trying a new beer if you want it to taste like the old one?

I dont want it to taste just like the other one, but I know stout is a whole genre of beer. Id like to see what all the other stouts are like not just guinness. As I said, I wasnt able to find a normal irish stout, I was only finding Extra and Imperial, which seem to be a different genre on their own.

Its like asking whats similar to Coke, which would bring up pepsi. They are both cola and taste similar but are different lol.

Heh.. I just very recently learned that there is 'beer' that doesn't taste like piss.

Lagers and the like.. I'm still trying to find out the difference between a Lager and an Ale.

I like the dark beers :D

I like to Drink the dark beer too but I just cant chug it down like I can light color beer lol. I can pound back bud select like its koolaid, I have to go slow with something like an imperial porter.

Then again, I had some unfiltered wheat beer last night, nice gold color but had to take it slow with that stuff too. Its thick like a stout, real cloudy and had junk that settled at the bottom.

Finally a thread that got my attention!

Ale = top fermenting yeast
Lager = bottom fermenting yeast (ie it sinks)

Guinness = puke (sorry). It's watery, fizzy, and flat on taste. I could grab the worst bottle of beer in my cellar, cut it 50% with water and it would still be better than Guinness.

I just had Heavy Seas "Peg Leg" which is an imperial stout. It's somewhat dry. There was a normal amount of carbonation. Bells Kalimazoo Stout, Left Hand Imperial Stout are both somewhat mild and dry. Three Floyds Blacksun like Alan mentioned is yet another you might try.

FWIW, don't discount or ignore a beer based on it's classification. They are used very loosely. Check out http://www.beeradvocate.com. Register, read as much as you can about beer, check out some reviews and the forums, then surf over to the beerfly area to find where to buy real beer and start drinking.

Name some of the beers you have tried and what you didn't like about them.

Recently,

I had an Irish stout thats like guinness in the can, even had the widget in it. Beamish irish stout draught, wasnt very good at all, was like guinness but very watery. It had no body to it, like drinking brown water with foam on the top.

Iron city lager in aluminum can, it sucked royal lol. I saw it in the store and its from my home town so I tried it. Tasted like water down coors light maybe. No idea why my family all drank it when I was a kid.

In heat wheat, unfiltered hefeweizen which was pretty good. It was real thick and nice color, had junk that settles in the bottom. It tastes like what I imagine wheat beer should taste like lol. Like your really tasting natural wheat not some for of it.

Big bear Black stout, It was good real strong taste to it. Better than guinness extra stout I think but leaves a strong after taste. I had it in the Big bottle and it got me buzzed easy lol.

Old viscocity, was alot like the big bear stout I thought, real thick and strong again. It was a bit much though I had to really drink it slow also it left that after taste. Had an odd taste I dont think Ive ever drank before.

I had a couple more over the weekend for the 1st time but Im realizing I dont know how to review beer lol.
