Ok wierd problem. I had a red top optima battery in my car for over a year and had all kinds of silly problems. The battery would keep dying on me and i would have to jump the car about once a month. Checked everything and couldn't figure it out. Brought the battery back to the store to get tested. kept telling me no problems with it... about the fourth time i brought it back they tested it and said the battery was defective... They replaced it for free. New optima red top. same problem. Took an everready battery and put it in the car had it in for over a month No problems. question
Has anyone had problems with the optima batteries?
YES!
I have had issues with Optima batteries in several cars. The main issue is that the dropouts working at the auto parts stores dont know what the hell they are doing (thats why you have to bring your part with you as they will 80% of the time sell you the wrong part and convince you its the right part)
What happens is they dont notice that an Optima is a gel-cell battery. It has to be charged at 2 amps NOT on a fast charge that kills the battery. What happens is they charge it and sell it to you basically damaged.
I had the jackass at the Advance in Colonial Heights VA detonate my battery in the charger (it had been ok both times it left me sitting) then he notices that he doesnt HAVE ANY IN STOCK! Joy. I had to go to Petersburg to get a replacement.
With other folks what has happened over time is they seem to change shape and are not dependable. You arm your alarm and in the morning its dead. kaput. If you want you can even buy an optima knock off at Merchants... Looks exactly the same. I mainly bought it for the stereo but there are better options and the warranty isnt what it used to be..
