I don't know of any batteries made for automotive use that are a real gel cell. One of the brands even went to the trouble of trade marking "Gel Cell" so they could advertise their AGM battery as a gel cell... it was either Optima or Odyssey.

There is a difference between AGM and gel cells though. Both require different charging strategies than a conventional batteries. IIRC they aren't as forgiving and with gel cells you can't supply them with more than 14v or they're toast. Gel cells are not necessarily the best choice for most automotive applications. It takes longer to charge and MOST alternators can not safely charge them without additional circuitry.

I may be remembering a fair amount of this incorrectly, but this is what I recall.

if you want an optima w/o lengthening the cables, you have to get a 34r red top. mine was special order and took 2 weeks to get. i ordered it directly through interstate batteries.

for that coin. Get a Oddessy (stinger and a whole slew of relables) and be done.
I followed this advice and it's been GREAT. Plus it's perfect size to do your overflow relocation.
