LMAO - Believe it or not, I COMPLETELY missed the fact they were on JE papers. I like the forced pin oiling, the accumulator groove, and what appears to be gas ports around the top ring, but the picture of the bottom of the piston makes me think they AREN'T gas ported - just notches. If that's the case, it seems like that would make it easier to cause the top ring to flutter under high rpm.

Clear that up for us? :)

The top ring is gas ported, the accumulator groove you noticed is actually a precaution to eliminate ring flutter (you probably already knew that).

I'm using a triple coat in my 7M Sean, Ceramic Crown, Moly Skirts and Heat dispersant underneath.

All Techline products.

IJ, there are different schools of thought here and I know from reading your posts on Supraforums you're not exactly new to the game. :)

Personally I don't normally lean to the crown coating since it changes things. Reflecting heat off the piston is a good thing (for the piston) but obviously it changes the amount of heat in the mixture and in the head. While we are already pushing the limits of gasoline trying to make 7hp / ci, I think it's rolling the dice a bit more to reflect more heat back into the mix. (application dependent obviously)

My secondary thought on the crown coat is that to make it effective the valve faces and combustion chambers should be coated as well. Not only for the full benefit of what you're trying to do - but because at the end of the day, the ridiculous things we're trying to do, and ridiculous heat we are generating from this horsepower (especially on VP Import and the like) are having to be transferred through a Toyota head casting which was only designed to see 320hp.

I'd like to hear more about your heat dispersant coating underneath though. Generally the under crown/skirt coatings offered are for oil shedding reasons, which I don't usually put on 2JZ pistons since the oil is what cools the piston down - not to mention it's not a big piston so it's not carrying a ton of oil. Aluminum has pretty good heat transfer properties so I'd like to know more about this coating that I'm guessing is supposed to disperse the heat even better?

Sounds pretty interesting.

Mark: As I said I'm on a low power endurance type build as the car will spend time on the track so I have a very different approach to if I were doing something like Sean's engine!

Having carefully read your post I have to agree 100% thanks for sharing!

The heat dispersent is just something my coater and I thought may just help with the transfer from the backs of the crowns to the Oil as I was running LPG as a fuel and it tends to run at far leaner power mixtures than Gas.

I use the Crown coating as an insurance policy "just in case" of a leanout after losing an injector on the dyno many years back, of course it couldn't just stop it had to provide just enough fuel to torch a hole in the crown.
(the ceramic may or may not stop this but I figured it was worth a try)

Like most things though without extensive testing I can't say 100% that it helps but it doesn't hurt and now I'm back on Gas it's just an added benefit.

Just figured I'd mention it here in case it was something that may help in your case.

7hp/ci is just amazing from a production based block :aigo:

thank you,

i have been working hard the past few years trying to make it what it is today. if you did check out my thread you will know that Mark, who also is the one to had these pistons made, is really good at what he does. and even though i could of had them done myself, i trusted him to do it, since he knows alot more about these engines than i do. he has also helped me with countless other things.
so i will have to give me a big thanks to him for helping me.

Awesome pistons Sean. Any reason you are keeping it a 3l block? Hoping all that nitrous will spool your new (and probably bigger) turbo?

all i know is that you TRULY deserve the 'baller' title... i dont travel over to the dark side much... haha... but im glad i saw your build thread over there. i love how the front header panel was molded into the fenders... cleans up the supras body lines very nicely.

i had to laugh when i read that you ditched your first fuel setup though... all that time and money just to throw in 3 walbro's... haha. good stuff though.

thanks. because with my current setup i dont see the need to go with a 3.4L i dont think i will go any bigger as far as turbo size. darin went 8.7x on his 3L so that should be fast enough for me

Lame setup? lol.. well the three walbros work well. and i have it staged with the motec, so its not the lame...

and it looks much cleaner, if i do ever need more fuel, then i will be going with a weldon external. but i dont really see the need for it yet, since i have enough fuel for about 1300whp.

darin switched to a 3.4 for his 8.55? I always thought it was a 3.0 still

no he is still on a 3.0L.. stock crank, carillo rods custom cp pistons..
