Bad SparkPlugs or Injectors

Hi Guys,

Been trying to maintain this car of mine for a while now. Just want your thoughts on a new problem.

Turn the car on, I get rumbling sound as if one of the cylinders isnt firing, but it goes on and off, obviously car doesn't drive well like this, if I rev it up to about 3000rpm it misses a beat alot less frequently, after about 10mins or when engine reaches operating temperature, the missing goes away, not entirely though, if i let it idle it will miss every so often, but no way near as bad as when i first start the car cold.

I have tried:
-Check spark on all six wires, with a light gun, ALL FINE!!!
-cleaned 5,6 spark plugs, had a heap of oil in the valley!
-wiggled injector wires around

I will try:
-temporarily install known working spark plug into 5,6

I had a similar problem about 10months ago, I changed a spark plug with an old one from my bhg engine, solved it completely.

I think the problem is the same this time. What do you think? which component would be dependent on engine temperature? I guess i can visualize the sparkplug covered in oil and only every now and then sparking, then by the time it heats up the oil is evaporated leaving a clean surface to arc on.

i had this same problem a couple of months ago.. my problem was #4 and #5 fuel injectors. You should try a fuel system cleaner first because that can simply fix it and if it doesnt you have to change your fuel injectors...

Yeah I know, I have this problem every few months, its probably my cam covers leaking oil. I should get to that soon. I don't think thats the problem though, unless the oil has soaked the plugs and it cant make a spark. Question: is oil supposed to be able to get into the cylinders through the spark plug hole? or would the reason the plugs are covered in oil be that as I pull them out the oil runs onto it?

I will try an injector cleaner.

I am using NGK Iridium's, they don't seem to last long though the first one died in a about a year, I dont know what caused it. I only drive 15,000kms a year. ???

I put normal unleaded fuel in just before the problem started, i've been running on the 98 octane fuel we have here in Australia for years and the other day I put normal in just to see what would happen. But I forgot! Its been gradually getting better since I've refueled with 95 octane. I'll put some injector cleaner in next time too, lol how funny!

I've been running it on 98 octane petrol since I got it and the problem is still there. I even put 2 bottles of injector cleaner though it in 2 successive tanks.

The weird thing is, my car seems to be going thru a cycle of running awesome for a few days without the problems, and then it goes shitty for a few days with the problems as bad if not worse than before I fixed everything up.

check your vacuum hoses for leaks.

Forget injector cleaner. Use a qt. of ATF in your next high octane fill up.
It'll burn out more carbon scouring than the injector cleaner and it'll lubricate everything. It's a win, win.

It makes the gas something like a 2 cycle oil. Like for a weedeater. Kinda.
It'll make you puff smoke, but that means its working. Run a half a tank and top it off with high octane again mixing the two together and go racing fellas.

It's an old school trick. It's the best injector cleaner/lube you can get.

It's on old myth that's ineffective and won't die, used by people who don't know any better. Not to mention there are far better ways to clean injectors these days. How about a little science to back up your claim? Even though I already know the answer feel free to explain what's in ATF that you think has such great cleaning abilities. Or what's in ATF at all.

ATF? wtf the only thing Iv ever heard of is putting it into your cylinders if a motor has been sitting a hell of a long time and you think the rings might be rusted. If you leave in in for a week it'll seep down through the rings and make the startup alot better.

Shit, if you want to clean your cylinders, do the mexican tune-up.. water . Mist water into the intake
