backspacing

hello all,
I have an 89 MK3 stock ride height, not too low and not 4x4. I need some guidance about wheels. i am trying to buy a set of wheels for MK3, but i don't know how big i can go if i decide to lower the car. can i go 18" or 19"? what is the maximum backspacing for any wheels without rubbing?

I don't know if i am asking the right questions, so please .....HELP
