What would cause a car to backfire before the engine actually turns over. (when its trying to be started)

Valve timing? How would i go about fixing this?

well if you retard it and it lessens/goes away its pre ignition via spark. if it doesnt go away then its not ignition related.

only other way combustion could escape would be threw a valve thats open at the wrong time.

maybe your damper timing marks are off. put a screw driver down #1 and check the marks.

yeah, from what it sounds like i would make sure your cam gears have the right marks, and that your damper mark is in the right place. It could be as simple as that. Every symptom you describe to me sounds like an ignition problem. But thats just what it sound like, never seen the car run in person thou! but id like to

this happened to MrBaboon when he assembled his motor back together. The CPS was 180 degrees off. We couldn't figure out why his car sounded so fracked up on startup ... Nashman had a good chuckle and told us the problem ;)

In doing it by the book, you should be close to 10btdc. If you do it with the cam covers off, you can get it almost exact. In doing it this way with the covers on, I was @6btdc. Make sure to double check (w/ light) after the car is running and warm - this will have an effect on how it starts.
