awesome times setting TPS (not really)

so w/ the top two pins back-probed you are supposed to be able to adjust the TPS to break continuity, correct? then w/ a feeler gauge (of proper size of course) you are supposed to adjust it back to obtain continuity? not so on mine. the continuity decreases or increases when I turn it, but it doesn't break :nono: is my TPS bad or what? I've got to be honest I'm not really getting any sort of accurate readings from my multimeter, but still I WOULD know if continuity was broken.

shit... I've got an analogue one

so it says @ .7-.9 I'm supposed to lose continuity, but I can't get it to do that at all -_-

jeez how could I miss that, you're not supposed to back probe it....

but still the TPS is installed backwards from the way mine is facing in the diagram does that even matter?

$5 says you're looking at the diagram for the 7M-GE. There are two pictures and they're backwards of each other.

Insert a 0.028 in. (0.70mm) feeler gauge between the throttle stop screw and stop lever. Rotate the TPS counter-clockwise and slowly back clockwise until the Ohmmeter just looses continuity, (infinite ohms).

There should be continuity with a 0.020 in. (0.50mm) feeler gauge inserted in the stop. There should be NO continuity with a 0.035 in. (0.90mm) feeler gauge inserted in the stop

0in. (0mm)-------------VTA - E2 0.2 - 1.2 k ohms
0.020in. (0.50mm)------IDL - E2 2.3 k ohms or less
0.035in. (0.90mm)------IDL - E2 Infinity
Full Open---------------VTA - E2 3.5 - 10.3 k ohms
------------------------VC - E2 4.25 - 8.25 k ohms

This is what alldata says, wonder why its slightly different than the tsrm?

This. The TPS is facing the opposite direction on the 7MGTE so take that into consideration.

 thanks for the input guys... I was back probing, I think that was the issue (I hope) looks like you're supposed to take the connector/plug off (I did not)

well, just so you guys know... back probing or not.... the results are the same. The reason I back-probed (shouldn't have been any voltage) is because I'm pretty sure I adjusted my TPS that way back in 07

but STILL I can't get a break in continuity in the circuit... IDK what to make of this... broken TPS?

What is the very first step in this procedure: http://www.cygnusx1.net/Supra/Library/TSRM/MK3/manual.aspx?S=FI&P=101

If the key was on there was voltage. If the key was off you risk measuring resistance in other parts of the circuit. This is all basic stuff. Certainly a mechanic of your self-professed caliber should know it. He should also know the best way to deal with this is not to measure resistance at all. That said if you insist on sticking with ohms and can't get what is nothing more than a single pole switch to open either the TPS is bad, you're on the wrong pins, or you don't know how to use a meter. It's as simple as that.

So the key is suppose to be on when setting TPS?

I realize back probing would be checking resistance of the entire circuit, even so, I believe the results would be the same if all I was trying to do was find a break in continuity between IDL and E2

in any case... I flipped the TSRM upside down and BAM adjusted my TPS... I may be a genius when it comes to certain things, but I also fail miserably when it comes to the simplest things (randomly)

Car runs and idles normally now -_-

Here is 105/hr worth of free advice. You can watch for 51 then adjust to when it shuts off. That did in fact happen on the line at Toyota.

interesting advice Nick.... all I did was unscrew the tps to where it was a lil loose, break continuity between IDL and E2 @ .9mm and re-obtain it @ .7mm pretty simple... the only things I had to move were 2 vacuum lines and the plug for the TPS (and the TPS obviously)

it was much easier once I was actually testing continuity on the RIGHT pins (was looking at the 7m-ge diagram, and it's pretty much upside down)
