Thanks, rich. Good write up.

I wish shipping wasn't an issue so I could send this to someone like yourself. I have ALWAYS wondered how to fixture a crank to grind rod bearings - polishing I assume is a strip of material that you let polish the rod bearings while the crank is fixtured and spun on the axis of the mains. But how a surface is ground, taking 0.010" off (or so), is beyond me...

It sounds like getting 0.010" under clevites are the way to go. I'll give my block, crank, rods, and caps to the machine shop and let them do the plastigage fun stuff. The machinist I spoke to told me to go on down and have a talk with him before we even do anything so it sounds like a good honest shop. Hell, I'll ask for a tour and have him walk me through his process.

This all being said, how the HELL do you fixture a crank at it's outer points and get a machine to hit a bearing at the crank center to a tenth? I think I need a tour of an engine machine shop while in operation...

The engine is at the shop and they will be sizing 0.010" under bearings to my crank after/while being turned.

They want $220 or $250 for a balance. I will be using new NPR pistons but otherwise the same internals (rods, crank). I was told to balance if using new pistons which change how it was originally balanced. If I am going with the same piston that came out, is it necessary to balance?

My cylinders look like a mirror and still have hone marks from when it was assembled in 1987. I planned to hone and drop in new rings and pistons. The machine shop says I will definitely need to bore at 100K miles. I feel like this is somewhere that they can tell me I need to bore even if the bore is still straight. I'm tempted to ask to see it mic'd if it came to this. This being said, if my pistons look good, can I just avoid all and reuse the originals and get a ring kit? Benefits to either route?

I come from a land down under
Balance is worth the $

I agree with the shop at 100K miles the holes are no longer round or straight.

These are the things that will make a difference in a good build and a half ass one that will it initially makes good power will be short lived and suffer problems.

The aftermarket Bearings need to be installed and measured in the block they're to be used in as the Main tunnels from Toyota can be within a range of sizes THEN you grind the crank to suit and install the bearings back in the exact location they were measured for.

Same goes for the rods.

The hardest part about this is finding a machine shop that understands it
