Auto trans FAIL

The car:
1987 Turbo - 4 speed auto
car started life as a manual and was AUTO swapped
I've NEVER beaten on it, I don't think it's seen past 4000RPM or more than 2-3PSI since I've owned it

the problem:

Transmission has been working pretty much flawlessly since I've owned the car aside from a bit of a clunk when going from R to D which I think is just some play in the driveshaft or a mount or something. Not even really that severe, just, noticeable.

Today I drove it about 50 miles *somewhat quickly* maybe 70-80mph the whole time. Stopped and waited for someone for about 45 minutes. When I left the car suddenly only has 1st gear and the speedometer isn't working. Not able to do much troubleshooting in the rain with only a cellphone for a light and a curb to pull up on, I didn't see any issues under the car, the speedo cable appears to be in place in the transmission, and everything else seems fine. I didn't find any blown fuses either under the hood or under the dash. It may be making a very faint whining noise as I drive too that I don't remember hearing before.

When I put the car in D or 2 it will shift into 1, and go fine. Depending on RPM it will drop back to idle when I let off the gas pedal and seems to work fine aside from not shifting out of 1. If I put the car in 1 the car stays in 1 and won't drop back to idle when I let out of the gas. So I really think/hope that it has something to do with the speedometer.

Hoping someone has some idea as to what has gone wrong here and that it isn't internal.

Thanks in advance for whatever advice you can offer.

It's the speedo cable...the speed sensor the auto tranny uses is in the gauge cluster speedo. The cable usually breaks in the small angled piece that attaches to the tranny. If the main cable got close to the downpipe and melted inside, that will do it too. Replacing the main cable is a PITA since you have to remove the gauge cluster.

Thanks, I saw that there's two pieces when I was under it today, that kicks ass.

I haven't been able to get it apart yet, my garage is full (rx-7 inside) and it started raining.

Is a manual trans speedo cable (the transmission part) the same as an automatic?
