Sorry to bring this back, but I have a question for those of you who replaced the tranny only. When you detach it from the engine, what stops the engine from flopping backwards in the engine bay and crushing something? In my mind, I see the tranny come off, and no more weight on the back of the engine, so would it not fall forward or something? I'm thinking of replacing the auto tranny in my parking spot is why I ask.

I was thinking about it due to the fact that I have no way of removing the engine/tranny combo, and I don't want to have to disconnect the engine just to swap trannies.

as far as your question about the motor. as long as your motor mounts are good your motor should sit in place just fine by its self. i have left my motor in my car without a tranny for a couple days. it just chilled by itself without anything holding it.

I come from a land down under
Our motors don't "flop back" they flop forward as the mounts are behing the centreline/balance point when you remove the trans.

To reinstall I have a piece of pipe I put under the balancer and raise with a trolly jack to tilt the enging back into the "flop back" position ;)

Never had a problem with my motor flopping forward or back after removing the tranny which I did like three times (newb). Did have to put a block under the crank pulley so I could jack up the front of the motor so I could reach the top tranny mounts so maybe it moved some. And it is a real PITA for sure. Worst thing is I have to do it again cus I screwed up my valve body putting in shims. I tore a gasket when removing the valve body due to care-lessness and then didn't get it put back together right. Oh well learn from your mistakes and don't fuck with shit when you don't know what your doing.
