I changed the fluid in my auto box today. When i drained the old fluid out i got 2 litres of fluid out. Does this sound about normal?

heres a pic of the old fluid

also once i had drained it into the pop bottle i noticed this in the bottom of my jug

could that be the clutch packs breaking up? or is it normal to get stuff like that in old atf fluid

WOW that's some dirty fluid! Did you do a drain/fill or did you use a powerflush machine? The debris looks like clutch material, but it's normal to lose a little bit as the fluid deteriorates. I've seen darker fluid, but damn.

i just drained off what was in the sump and measured how much i got out, which was 2 litres (uk measurements) and put the same back in.

I guess it should have a full flush out after seeing what was removed. Ill check out the phone book for local auto transmition places.

my pas fluid looks the same colour aswell. perhaps i should get that changed asap aswell

DO NOT FLUSH IT!

Flushing it with bad fluid like that will KILL your clutch packs!

hmm i thought flushing would be having the engine running and with the drain plug removed and the car way up on ramps. then putting new fluid in untill it came out the bottom.

should i just drive it a bit then keep doing the same again then? once ive drained and refilled a few times the fluid should all be new

I've seen cars with a lot of miles have the trans. fluid flushed new filter and all new fluid added, and not move again. At the most, change the filter, and then refill(put in at least 2 qts., start the car, then add fluid until it reads full on the stick). You should be checking the trans. fluid regularly with the car at normal operating temp., running, in park or neutral, on a level surface. Add fluid until the dipstick reads full.

Running the car with no fluid in it will most assuredly burn up the trans.

aye i always check the fluid with engine running at opp temp and selector in either park or neutral. guess ill just stick with dropping the sump plug every few weeks till all the nasty old fluid has been removed

Flushing an auto tranny is easy, but you will need a helper and 10-12 bottles of ATF Dex II. Just disconnect the feed line to the cooler and place in a pan big enough to hold 12+ liters. Start the car and verify ATF is flowing into the pan and add ATF through the dipstick tube using a tranny fill funnel. Check the color of fluid while doing this...when it goes a clean red (approx 10 bottles), you are done. Tip: have all the bottles open and ready to pour ;)

Reattach the cooler hose and check the fluid per the TSRM...do not over fill! I prefer to check the fluid warm...make sure you shit through the gears a few times right before you check it.

I also installed a filter on the feed line to the cooler...a Trasko by-pass that filters down to less than 10 microns. Might want to consider dropping the pan and cleaning the oil strainer. A cooler upgrade is a good idea as well.

I've also heard flushing a crapped up tranny will kill it but since I've never see it happen I refrained from jumping in until now. My opinion is a flush using the cooler lines and refill with synthetic is worth the risk. At least do several pan dumps over time and install a filter as the Dubster suggested. John, have you checked that Trasko element yet? Interesting how it turns color from the top down as it takes the stuff out while the rest of it remains pink.

i think jdub meant to *shift* through the gears hehe

drop the pan, replace the filter (do it yourself it will save you 100$+) and look in the pan, see if your magnets are covered in gunk. normal wear will just have some gunk on the magnets. maybe a little dirty in the pan. i burned up my first auto trans and it was blacker than old oil... and smelled aweful..

i think its the clutch particles that stick to the magnet and the other metal (brass) from the gears will not. i'll double check this because its been too long since ive read up on it
