Ran mine hard at 550+ rwhp both manual and auto and the only failure I had was a starved pinion bearing from high speed runs (an LSD suffered the exact same failure) 
Yep then when I killed the bearing swapped the Clutch diff back in and killed it too
Then went 9".
Then went 9".
In my case adding a cooler and pump to the G series would have fixed the issue as well but I always wanted an IRS 9" (it has the cooler and pump)

There was no real limiting factor I was just playing around as I've never had a car that would accelerate that hard at the top end.
1st few times was with the Tremec TKO 5 speed then with the built a340e.

For really high road speeds your combination is in the danger zone.
Low Diff gears high OD % and a motor that will rev lands you a possible starved pinion bearing and at speed it only takes seconds to become square.
If you're serious about going fast I'd look at plumbing a pump and cooler into the diff with the return being between the pinion bearings.

I have mine mounted in front of the fuel tank.
I use a VDO Pump designed for BMW gearboxes and a temp switch in the diff case to turn it on/off.
