in heavily modified 7m's that are running increased boost and higher compression ratios but still retain factory ECU's would it be necessary to retard the base timing to say 8 degrees btdc in an attempt to prevent knocking? or does the ecu take care of that for u, meaning base timing should always be set to 10 degrees btdc regardless?

Bad idea. You are retarding engine timing refrence, including injector firing. That small amount won't do much, but is not a good idea. The ECU pulls timing when it sees detonation. By then, it could be too late. It also pulls timing under heavy load for that exact reason.
