O.K I am in the process of removing the head off my motor and it has the head studs from ARP. I did not install them or I would already know.
What is the size of the nut? and do I have to remove the cams to remove them? IT IS A TIGHT SQUEEZE. Any info on this would great.

Thanks Larry

14mm 12 pt socket...a 3/8" drive is easiest, but you'll need a 1/2" drive adapter for your torque wrench when you torque them back down. A 9/16" 12 point socket will work too iirc. You can do it with the cams in, but it's easier with them out and you make sure the socket is square on the nut. The cams have a specific torque sequence in the TSRM.

You can rotate the cams to let the socket/extension down in there. If I remember, the cams have flat spots in key areas for this reason. Once they are lined up just right the socket went right in for me, if it wasnt lined up it didnt seem like it would work....

IIRC, there's a very special spot on the cam that will let you get to all the nuts without having to rotate the cam muiltiple times. Finding it isn't easy, but if you keep rotating the cams as you go along, you'll come across it eventually.

Yea, I meant just wiggling it back and forth to get in that sweet spot, not so much spinning it for each one....

More good advice. However I have mine on a stand and the head hooked to the engine hoist. I was going to use it to lift it up.

honestly... pull the studs... why ? well you will have alluminum shavings coming out when the studds pull threw head...some will mar it... better to pull them...

Never thought of that. Hopefully they will come out without strain. So should I put the head on and then the studs during install?

Might just be me but I have always left the studs in my engine until it was time to clean or replace them. It really isnt that difficult to lift the head straight up until it clears the studs.

I also will install the studs the same way...last after the head is on and aligned with the index pins.

^^Yep much easier to get 2 little pins lined up than all the studs.

The studs should not be in that tight mostly finger tight.

finger tight yes but that requires a thread chaser.

Now I myself use a bottom tap as I ended up braking a chaser in the threaded hole. Bottoming tap also reaches the very last of the bottom threads really good! Makes for a nice clean threads which than you can go finger tight to the bottom.
