I was just wondering why studs are said to be the better option. Also how tight should I "hand tighten" them?

Studs get threaded all the way into the block. Bolts get threaded in until theyre tight. So studs take advantage of maximum holding force.
Hand tight means hand tight. Dont over think it, just thread them in till they stop.

After chasing the Holes to remove the 15+ years of crap that will prevent them screwing in hand tight of course ;)

Yes, they should go all the way to the bottom of the holes. Bolts only use about half the threads while studs use them all.

You chasing threads should look something similar to this:

Note that tap in the left hand, and looking to see if all the crap got taken out...
[SUB]I've just wanted to use that pic since it was taken :p [/SUB]

Just to let people know if they don't, there is a differance between chasing a thread and tapping or retapping threads. There are "taps" available to chase threads. These are not to be used to make new threads.

I had to use a normal tap (also, make sure it's for blind holes, flat tip,not pointed). Broke one of the "thread restoring" taps...

I used a bottoming tap after running a chasing tap down the holes- 4 of the studs still would not thread all the way in :(

Studs are better in the fact that they only have one axis of resistance as you torque the fastener. The bolts have two.

This worked really well to clean all the holes on my block. Soaked the holes with engine degrease overnight and then used this the next days and it was good to go. I cleaned all of them and I could of screwed all of the studs down by hand. A level on them helped to show they were equal. You will be suprised all the crap that would come out of there.

Chasing threads means to send a tap down all the bolt holes to clean the crap out. Google "thread chaser".

A tap and a chaser are two different things, just watch your wording. You're not sending a tap down the threads. Taps are meant to cut threads, chasers are meant to clean/repair threads. (and by repair, not something that's completely mangled)

If you are confused what to use to clean the threads, buy this. Soak the holes with engine degreaser, let it sit and send this down in there and turn it back and fourth. Rinse with gas and inspect to see it is all clean.

Helps people to avoid using a tap instead of a chasing tool. I used this with that method and I was able to screw all the ARP studs in by hand ALL THE WAY DOWN.

LOL! You said expensive was the issue? Just trying to make cleaning the threads a dummy proof job if they cannot tell the difference between a chase or a tap. :nono
