So after blowing a valve stem seal and having a seeping headgasket i decided to take the head off and get it all fixed but the i came across an interesting development. Seems that at some point of time the car had some detonation going on? But i'm not quite sure when that occurred since i've always had it running on the richer side and had the timing really mild...even more so that stock. Either way looks like the pistons had a little bit of deforming/melting along the intake side. Everything else seemed fine, the walls are good and the gasket was intact, looks the studs needed to be retorqued at some point of time but thats besides the point.
These are Arias pistons btw.

These are the only pics i have for now but i will try to get some more with my real camera.

So i guess my question is if the pistons are fine or should they be replaced?
I will be running either e85 or water/meth injection when it comes all back together..

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,
-emp.

wierd....780 injectors using a little over half of that at best....i will have them flow tested or buy new ones.

Do you think the pistons are ruined Ian?

Hard to say without them being out and good pics, might have had a supply issue i.e. Pumps/lines/filter.

Pump is a A1000 and seemed to be working fine...then i have a -10 from there to the rail...i'll check on the filter and replace it.

Will get better pics later this week

Still need to "see" them from the sides Emp.....

+1
I just replaced pistons that there was very little signs of detonation on the domes, just a few micro beads at the edge of 2 pistons.
(they had ceramic coating)
but when they were pulled, the whole side of one piston was torched.
So there may be aluminum damaged down past the rings, or maybe not.
I have seen other pistons like yours that had noticeable errosion, but the rest of the pistons were fine.

Are there any signs of aluminum being transfered to the cylinder wall?
If so, then there is a good chance of there being skirt damage.
