Ok, so I decided I would do some cam work, help wake up my turbo, reap the benefits of the head work being done... After talking to a few people, I decided to go with a regrind... I went to my shop to get the cams, and all the journels are scratched... I tried to take pics, hope you can see what Im talking about, I dont have the best cam for up close detail...

I heard this marking was normal for your motors, and my machinist even said: "Every 7M head I've worked on has these markings"... So, IS this normal wear? And can they be re-used...

Thanks...
Jake

my machinist, who builds race engines, said that every 7m he's ever seen has cams that look like that. he said it's fine to re-use them. he also hooked me up, by filing down a few of the cam caps to help get the clearances in spec.

he said most machinists don't do that, though. i really wouldn't know. but, if it helps you any, i re-used mine, and i'm not having any trouble. :)

Mine were a bit crappy but they gave them a light linish checked clearances and were good to go!

Keeping in mind I used a new head so it had 0 wear in the cam journals!

The fit in this case is more important than the finish Jake!

I think I'll just send them off to Snieder and see what they say... If they give the all clear, then I'll re-use them... I'd rather NOT spend $800-$1200 on cams if I dont have to...

Thanks guys... Seems like we all have this cam problem like Bobby was sayin...

Cams should be an essential upgrade to having a high horsepower 7m like you are looking for...Just look at stock cam'd 7m dynos...

They will be an upgrade... Just how much I dunno yet... If I can get a regrind for a few hundred that wakes her up some, then that'd be great... But if they're worthless then it looks like I'll be researching a good aftermarket cam... Something in the 260s with about a 7.5mm lift...

yea jake I wouldnt worry I've seen some a tad bit worse looking and were very much so useable! Common for the 7m cams. Mine actually looks a lil worse then urs and they were just fine.
Cam upgrade and sometimes regrinds can be rather expensive. But shit any head work can cost a bundle. More so then block and internals given on how much is actually done.

Mark, really? That would be AWESOME! Thanks man... I'd rather have a cleaner set to grind, so if you mean it, I'll certainly take you up on your offer...

Justin, anything I can do to make this big turbo spool and hold boost longer and faster, it'll be worth it... The last thing I want is another letter "r" dynograph, if you know what I mean...

Jake: I'm running these with good results .351"/9mm lift 280 degrees duration 226@50thou.

I think for your goals this would be the starting point if not larger!

I sort of doubt it can be done on standard cams Jake I had mine hard face welded so they're on stock base circle.

This keeps the shims to a minimum thickness as I always intended on revving mine I didn't want to be adding weight to my lightweight valvetrain.

I ended up using the one piece buckets for even more weight savings.

I think/feel small cams are going to choke your top end off pretty badly as we're limited to 1mm os valves.

Well, I will say they dont all look like that. The caps are align honed at the factory for the cams. Be careful, thoughtful, and double check clearances.

Of course if you are getting new aftermarkets, then having scoring like that wont matter to the cam anymore.
