You're listening to the wrong diesels then, lol. Someone I work with has a modified Ram and he completely destroyed a turbo Supra the other day.

They're kinda hard to hear over all the rattling and roaring as I pull away quickly... I've never had one keep up if I put in any real effort. Top end and diesel doesn't belong in the same sentence... like I said, great engines for hauling stuff, (people, equipment, freight, etc) but there's a reason there aren't many of them used in sporty cars.

Yep thought it was under 50, looked through my A70 weights index and it's not in there...46Lbs rings a bell though.
Sounds about right. Most carbon hoods I've seen over the years weigh between 15 and 20lbs. Still a nice little reduction, but far from enough to offset 400lbs of Rudolf's finest...

Diesel in a supra is very realistic, but you will have to sort out a MODERN diesel engine from a BMW or Mercedes from this side of the 20th century.

watch this dude, that mercedes kicks ASS!! Blacksmoke Racing

Thats right along with what I was thinking,

the Mercedes Benz OM642 v6 diesel weighs 460lbs alone and 585lbs with a R154 and puts out 240hp and 455tq.

7MGTE complete with turbo and A/C compressor 515lbs alone and 640lb with a R154 and puts out 230hp and 240TQ

1JZ-GTE weighs 700lb with R154 And puts out 276 hp and 268TQ

2JZ-GTE Alone 594 lbs + Getrag Six Speed is 746lbs and puts out 320HP and 330TQ

1UZ-FE + R154 is about 550lbs and puts out 256hp and 260TQ.

So the OM642 is the lightest on that list and has more HP then all but 1 stock MK3 engines and wipes the floor with all of them when it comes to torque. I would say that the diesel is looking kinda nice. Run the OM642 diesel with a R154 and the 3.7 LSD rear end out of a turbo MK3 supra or the 3.266 rear diff from the SC400. The OM642 has a 4800 RPM red line from what I have read and ass loads of torque so it should have no problem turning those gears. Who knows what you could get out of it for HP and TQ if you modded it and or upped the boost. Would probably kick ass for a drift car. Apparently it gets 30+ MPG too.

Keep in mind that Mercedes and BMW has delivered theese engines with very strong ZF manual gearboxes from Stock.... I think BMW is using ZF-tranny's ONLY on their M-series and Diesel-series (some of the smallest petrol four&six'es have weak trannys though), and they are good for over 700hp and 1000nm in some Petrol-applications (drifting, Dragracing etz). So dont get all "hyped up" by the R154... there are a few others that makes perfect gearboxes besides Toyota ;) and ZF is definitively one of them.

I don't disagree that there are quite a few good manual transmissions out there. I just tend to use the R154 when I do swaps into MK3 supras cause they are strong, cheep and they fit into a MK3 so well you would think they were made for it, LOL. I am not that familiar with Mercedes and BMW transmissions but I would guess like most of there stuff its really good but not cheep. I have always wanted to get my hands on a BMW 850CIS and see what I could turn it into.

Old school 850 with flip up lights are the best.

The R154 is strong, but it is a lot of work to make it fit to a BMW or Mercedes block (think about that clutch-setup)... but it all comes down to price/availability. Here where i live, in Europe... there are plenty of manual Mercedes and BMW 3L turbodiesel's as the "diesel-hype" has been growing strong for over 15 years now.... as a result the Toyota R154 transmissions are now very expensive cause they are becoming very rare. And a bmw M-series transmission is now actually cheaper... and the diesel-trannys are sold for less than 500$

Funny how things change ;)
