Anyone here work for Bestbuy/Geeksquad?

How is it?

My grandparents have been taking their computer to geeksquad to get their computer fixed and after leaving them with Geeksquad for up to four weeks, everytime they got it back they didnt fix it/said it had to be sent back. It appears all that they did was load it up with antivirus crap and gave them a printup saying it had no viruses.

Well my grandparents started calling me and having me look at it, turns out it was really simple things like it just needed driver updates for vista or the drive had to be formatted.

Anyways know I want to work at Geeksquad (feeling that I'm qualified), I just want some inside opinion on how the work enviroment is. I heard Bestbuys one of the top retailers to work for right now.

How do I get the job where I go around in the little VW making house calls?

dude, from those i have talked to, the pay sucks. go get a few certs (the new a+ is a joke) and get a job working desktop support, or for a company like DELTA. i chose the latter option while in school.

I work for Best Buy, not Geek Squad, though I'd love to work over there. You start out at higher pay over there, I believe $10 is the minimum, you can get a bit more if you have previous experience. And if you're full time you can get some pretty good benefits. Don't listen to these other people, they obviously have never worked there and seen what it's like. My store is pretty friendly management wise and I'm friends with some of the GS guys.

Agree...I had old college friends that used to work with Best Buy. They said it was good pay and management allowed them time for study/test, etc. However, every store would be different depending on management. On the other hand, they are all one co.

I applied there a long time ago, before they were called GeekSquad.

The interview included a lame knowledge test, they didn't hire me because I had no verifiable working experience as a computer tech. I don't regret it.

Geek Squad is total BS, they don't do crap and I bet they charge the hell out of you for nothing. Get a job at a different tech shop. I work as a tech for UCI and I make 10/hr to play starcraft, watch movies, and print pages. If I don't show up, no big deal, if I'm late, no one notices. I get my stuff done and the people there are nice.

Don't deal with BestBuys BS. My friend actually freelanced 4 or 5 year ago before Geek Squad and all that stuff. He lives in a fairly nice neighborhood and charged $50 an hour. Some places charge $80 an hour. Post on craigslist or in the paper even. Just freelance that shit (no taxes!).

I work for BB and I've been at 4 different stores. It all depends on management.

Some of the asshole managers don't realize that the whole world doesn't revolve around best buy hitting "budget". I just about lost it with one this summer. My new store is looking better and is less "used-car-salesman" ~ish.

I'm sure at GS, you worry less about that though. For some reason Best Buy Corporate is under the impression that anyone that walks into the store WANTS to be sold something that carries a lot of margin. Fucking scumbags, if you ask me. I hate being a customer at Best Buy 90% of the time if the employees treat me like a normal customer.

I'd say try freelancing and if you make some decent money, save yourself the hassle of all the Best Buy BS. The discount is good, the pay is average. The atmosphere could be great or could be horrible.

People should take there computers to reputable local computer store. Department store computer repair = kids that don't have enough experience to solve all problems. I mean what do you expect if they make $10/h? Why would any experienced person work there?

I have 3 years working as an information commons tech for a library, a bunch of side jobs for friends and family, then 2 years in computer multimedia and a year of computer fundamentals in HS.

That's plenty of experience, you can easily get hired for about 13 to 15 dollars an hour. I had only six months tech experience when I posted my resume on Monster.com. I think it took maybe a week after I posted it to get hired:biglaugh: , I got called for an interview the second day I posted my resume. The job I got through monster is where I am currently at, it's a direct selling company called Home Interiors & Gifts. I do web support for them, I usually chill for about half the day and the other half is lite tech work. The best thing you can do for yourself is prepare a great resume, it's all about presentation. You sound like you know what you are talking about, remember to present yourself in a professional manner and I am sure you will get hired. Try to make your resume as appealing as possible, but remember not to lie. Also, another great website to post your resume on is CareerBuilder.com. I have never used them but I have heard many great things about them. I know a couple of people I work with who got hired through them.

I think it helped me that I worked as a salesman at Fry's Electronics, I was in the Electronic Components section. That's where they keep motherboards, memory, Hard Drives, and other computer components. I did that for about a year and a half.

Someone might take you in. For 10-15 an hour they usually just want some practical experience and that HS course probably helps. You will be heavily supervised at first because local shops value there reputation. This is my experience anyway

We had an old guy at the store I work at get tackled and carried out of the store by sheriff officers, because he got pissed that GS hadn't given him his laptop back yet. Apparently he'd been waited like a month for it to get fixed and every time he called he got the run around. One day he came in got pissed, started yelling and swearing, and kept saying go ahead and call the cops, which I thought was weird. Well one of the managers did, and when they showed up the guy started going off on them too. So they ended up tackling the guy, and the guy crossed his legs when they had him on the ground so they couldn't stand him up, so about 4 officers carried him out of the store. It was fucking nuts. And they had his computer all he had to do was wait for the customers that were ahead of him to be helped and he would have gotten it. Fucking old people man..
