So I painted a few parts on my motor, and I plan on painting the engine bay, BUT, I dont want this shit chipping up all over on me... It looks REALLY great now, but... You know how paint is... So I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this? Is there a clear coat or an automotive paint I can buy that will harden like a shell over the paint to keep it from chipping and making it easier to clean?

Thanks guys...
Jake

For my bros birthday last year I bought hima greddy stb that was in poor shape. I stripped it down to bare metal, preped it, primered, laid down 3 coats of Duplicolor and then 3 more coats of high temp duplicolor engine enamal (clearcoat basically). It wipes down clean with a wet cloth w/o issue and hasnt dulled or changed color over the year thus far. Just dont bake it in an oven to help it cure like i did on the first try (cracked and discolored, too high heat for too long!)

Jake, I used base coat / clearcoat, and laid the clear coat in a few coats it gets real hard after engine temps bake it on, but be careful until its hardened. Theres a ton of pics step by step in my build thread.

There is a ton of good info by Adjuster in this thread, I found about everything you need to know in that one! I did days of cleaning and sanding and it was worth it I used ppg deltron dbc basecoat and ppg stratoclear clearcoat...... good luck!!

You can see how well it turned out in these.

Thats funny Kwik, I was gunna sell my HKS for a TiAL, but I might have to "borrow" that idea, lol... How does it sound having them both? Because I know they make two totally different blow off sounds...

Hells, i love it! Someday I'll figure out how to setup the video cam to download files.

Reign...Im not even sure I need it with the whole new setup, but I dont wanna surge another turbo to death. So better safe than sorry! It sounds cool, I dont like the loud whistly shit. It is a lower pitch with the tial, but a good force of air you can hear at 20 +. Low 7-8 psi you hear the Hks, 20+ the tial pretty much drowns it out @dumps it before the ssqv can blink.

Reign, couple more tips, since you got me thinking paint again (I will be doing a body resto over the winter).

Couple things I think made the diff for me.....Anal cleaning with dawn and hot water ( 2-3 times after each sanding), spending alot of time wet sanding the primer before the paint, with a spray bottle of water and 600 grit, all by hand. Cleaning the garage/ work area well before spraying.

Couple things I will Change next time, LIGHTING, get good lighting so you can really see down in the cracks and corners, pref overhead so its not in your way....And good water seperator, filter inline on your hose. I made it through the eng compt ok, but by the time I shot the bumper, I had some slugs of water go through, luckily, I was planning on doing the bumper over with the body so it was no biggie.

Thanks Kwik... I dont plan on painting the body myself, I'll have that done professionally... My main concern are the engine parts and doing the bay... I dont want the parts on the motor chipping all up and lookin like shit in a few weeks, ya know?
