I just wanted to see who on here was running any sort of custom catback/turbo-back system on their MKIII. Let us know about the size, material, price to make the exhaust, sound and voume, and how good it is to you. Pics will be nice too. I'm thinking of doing a custom 3" turbo-back to an HKS Carbon Ti. Thanks guys.

I made a simple 2.5" for my NA with some pipe/flange from the exhaust shop and a couple mandrel bent U pipes from summit racing. If you can get the car on a rack and have a welder its cake. I used a vibrant muffler and with my NA its pretty loud, we will see how it is after i swap my turbo motor in.

I have a custom exhaust made from 2.5" aluminized steel. I just did a rebuild with a t04e turbo, so I just changed the exhaust while I was at it. What I took off was a crappy 'do it so that it works' job. That is what was on there when I got it. At the smallest point, it was less than 2 inches. I built the down pipe from mandrel bent tubing, butting up the pieces. Took it down to just below the firewall. I put the o2 flange before the first bend recessing it so that it doesn't restrict air flow. I got lazy after that and took it to a shop to finish it. I had them finish the 2.5 inch using the stock cat (which I think flows a lot better than most aftermarket 'high flow' cats, especially the ones made for civics). It ends at the 2.5" muffler. Not sure what kind it is, but it is straight through, single outlet. no pics of exhaust at the moment. Camera broke before the project was finished. Engine build pics can be seen in my album. This is not much, but it should be more than enough for my target power of 400hp. Driven daily. It is moderately quiet, but has a smooth sound that says 'Hey, there is a fine tuned engine in here'.

Is it cause the HKS hi power muffler is loud or is it something else?

Hey Victor. Damn, that is one bigass exhaust man. Was it too loud? Oh, and if you're down, we're having a Supra meet this Sunday at Woodward. You can come and bring your 240 if you like. Let me know through PMs.

Custom 3" downpipe and 3" exhaust back to a Vibrant dual tip muffler. Also used a Vibrant stainless steel V-Band assembly to attach the exhaust to the downpipe. These V-Bands are really nice.

Huge improvement over my nearly 20yr old HKS 2.5" exhaust system.

And here is the 20yr old HKS system that was pulled off. It had at least two major blowouts. One in the resonator and one or more in the muffler. I came up with a makeshift "patch" for the muffler to keep the stuffing from continuing to blowout. I was way beyond badly in need of a new exhaust system! After considering several pre-made systems I decided the best solution was having exactly what I wanted built.

I prefer the "Q-Ship" approach. <grin> The looks I get after stomping on unsuspecting prey makes keeping the car as close to factory appearances as possible worth it. lol

I wanted as quiet a system as possible, but without compromising flow. This system turned out a bit louder than I was originally hoping for, but I've really grown to love it. It has a low, smooth tone. No raspy pops or clatter like most all the “fart cannon” systems I’ve heard. The Vibrant resonator also helps in reducing volume and highway drone.

Idle is a little too throaty for my tastes as I'd rather it be more of a quiet hum, but again I've grown to love it.

I doubt you will receive any flak from your local PD with a system like mine.

I really don't have a convenient way to record the sound of the system, but a friend of mine was showing me a new toy of his last night.

http://www.theflip.com

Maybe I can borrow it to get a video clip of the system in action.

Best,

Brad

I have a stailess 3 inch elbow and dp with 3 inch mild steel all the way back. no cats or muffler. $70 at a local exhaust shop. Its not perfect as i want to get a muffler. I want a Greddy Evo 2 muffler or HKS Super Dragger or somethin similar. Its pretty loud. But i dont mind it. neighbors probably hate it tho when i go start my car at 6:30 in the am. lol. Thats why i want a muffler. That and for looks.. I dont have any pics right now but i will try to get some soon. Its cold and snowing here right now tho.

I have a 3in Mandrel bent Turbo back that was made out of mild steel that has a magnaflow resonator. No cats, When I had a stock turbo and stock o2 housing i got complements everywhere on the exhaust note. Funny the bigger turbo i put on there the less amounts of compliments i get..lol If I find some pictures I will post them up.

@woody1989 i love your exhaust en i was thinking about making something similar,
did you use any resonators oid?

Hello Dutch,

Thanks for the compliment! I think it turned out nice as well.

Yes, I have the Stainless Steel Vibrant 1142 resonator along with the Stainless Steel Vibrant 1043 dual tip muffler. I've been happy with the Vibrant quality so far. Cleans up easily and construction appears to be solid.

I have a BIC DDP connected to a custom straight 3" exhaust system made by my local muffler shop with a fonza muffler w/a 4" tip.

car is real quite for a car w/a DDP in fact is quiter that a lot turbo cars out there (until the wastegate opens that is), and is all thanks to the fonza exhaust it has lots of resonating layers in the body before the tip.

total cost for exhaust system from the DDP down $140, including all materials and labor:naughty:

Any sound clips? Ive been looking to add a resonator to my current setup to try to quiet it down a little more and i think i may try the same resonator you are using.

The current exhaust on my car is stock elbow, HKS downpipe, 3" pipe w. 3" magnaflow cat, and a raptor racing dual tip muffler.
