Dude if he's over here breaking sockets you don't think he's applying more than 25 ft-lbs? Also, I've never heard of an impact damaging bearings before..

well i have seen it and you obviously dont know what they are capable of. its almost the same as bumping the starter with a breaker bar to the frame. the torque of the impact turning the crank pulley at 500+lbs with no oil pressure(since the bearing ride on oil no the metal itself) will cause damage to the bearings. it is not the proper way to take of a crank pulley by any manufacturer. but back on topic as this is not part of the discussion.

Ohhh ok, hmm, well then why did Jseamen in his removing engine guide tell me to remove the top 17mm nut?

&& Guys about the crappy tools, the 2 sockets i broke were "Kobalt" and 1 was a from a big tool set i got from a big Napa tool set lol not to mention they were maybe only a week old.. Pretty well known companies with well known durability, im pretty sure the reason they broke so easily was because it was -3 degrees...

What you have obviously seen is people doing things incorrectly. If the crank is turning while trying to take off the bolt you are wasting your time anyways, no matter what tool you're using.

Warm your tools up! :)

I wouldn't know what to do, Florida has never seen -3 degrees before, that I know of..

He also mentions relieving as much stress to the mounts as possible, so you don't accidentally break the mounts. I'd venture to guess that he was trying to be as thorough as he possibly could be in his article. He has some of the best articles on SM because he takes the time to have a picture for every step that he writes. Trust me, that is time consuming, and not done for his benefit. That top nut does not have to come out, but the mount will come out with the motor if left on. To me, it's much easier to access when out of the car.
