im looking to buy this 88 turbo targa from a local for $800. claims that his friend worked on it who is a mechanic for a toyota dealership. headgasket was replaced, no leaks, says that engine is in PERFECT running condition. heres the thing....needs a new or rebuilt tranny. now i have an 88 n/a. my tranny shifts perfectly..is it possible to do the tranny swap. i read somewhere that the w58 can hold around 300 horses with a turbo setup. if it can be done than im going for it, but i'll just be running a stock turbo setup save money to rebuild the tranny and go on from there. so wat are your guys thoughts. personally i think its a sweet deal. heres the listing.

i say get it and use the w58 while you rebuild the r154 even if the engine is really bad its still a clean looking shell

yes the w58 will be ok i had a w58 laying around and swapped it in another turbo car i had to convert it to manual and its holding fine. i upgraded the clutch and the car is at 300hp right now and has no problems with the tranny.

I put in the f1 racing clutch from ebay because it was cheap and i only planned on 300hp so i knew it would hold. it said its supposed to hold 400hp or something like that but don't believe ebay clutches. if you want a clutch to hold what it says look at the vendors here and get one. the ebay ones are knock offs and all that but they are cheap and good if you run close to stock.

nice to know. thanks cuz i was looking at these ebay clutches and for now i want to put in something that will hold some extra boost but still run something close to stock at the sametime.

w58 aren't as strong as the r154 but doesn't mean they are that fragile. It will hold no problem on a stock turbo engine. Do as ur planning and u'll be ok.

Dont use an ebay clutch. Any a w58 is push style clutch and an R154 is a pull style. So to swap between them youd have to swap slave cylinders too.

wait im confused...your saying that i have to swap the slave clynder from the r154 to the w58?

u have to use the slave cylinder that matches the tranny ..... they are completely different in looks and the way they bolt to the tranny.

i used a w58 for about a year and half with 190,000+ miles on it and i put around about 30,000 miles on it with 10-14psi .... my clutch setup was a heavy duty pressure plate and 6 puck disk which i still have if you are interested

the only reason it died was because the rear main seal was leaking and i did not notice until it was to late .... it must have ran without oild for about 3 weeks before i said hmmm let me check the gear oil and it was empty. It lasted about 5 months after that before it started to knock like hell
