LOL! I was wondering how long it would take for someone to catch that. :)

To answer the original question, I'm an Enterprise Architect.

And since nobody ever seems know know what we Architects do, here's a great definition:

the one thing im loving about working desktop support is that when there arent any calls, i get to surf the web :) SM is my other home.

A few of us here know what they are and do.....

Meeting after meeting after meeting after white board after vendor selection after RFP, after blah blah blah :aigo:

Yea, I spent from 10am until 4pm stuck in meetings straight through... No lunch. :(

But I got a lot of ground covered today...

And with that said, I'm going home. Be back on later.

IT? I'm not in it. :) Yeah, and 0101100101101111011101010010000001101100011011110111011001100101001000000111010101110011001011000010000001100001011011100110010000100000011110010110111101110101001000000110101101101110011011110111011100100000011010010111010000100000010000100100100101010100010000110100100000100001

I run the SFCC PC Shop, and am Tech Coordinator for the SFCC/EGI TECH initiative.

Meh. I make my students get certs. Me? I have 17 years of experience (started on an Atari 800XL - built my first OS from scratch on that baby).

I've done everything from run a full network for Wildwood High School (They gave me a class to do it, while I was in 10th and 11th grade) to re-wire the city of Mascott's computer infrastructure, to VPN the main offices of Polaris in Leesburg to Tampa.

I've programmed Cisco routers, built software from scratch, designed computer systems, designed and implemented networks, and even made Windows ME stable. ;)

There is literally nothing I have come across in the computer world that I can't fix/build. I'm in college for a dual major in ECE/CIS - I want to get into chipset design - unfortunately, for the wrong reasons. Damn good money, and work that I am damn good at.

I don't need a piece of paper to let someone know that I'm good at what I do ;) (of course, that gets used against me, too - 'oh we could pay you better if you had your certs')

I'm not worried about it. I make more money than most of the Professors at Santa Fe Community College ;) Which pisses them off, but hey - I've developed the reputation that commands top dollar.

But I do it because I'm good at it, not because I love it. :( What I really want to get into is stellar propulsion systems. I flat out love to build and fix things. I'm an engineer at heart, and always have been.

I live to learn - I honestly feel I will die when I walk through a day, and learn nothing new.

control alt delete. i like to do more of the hardware bassed problems, IE fixing printers, building computers, modifing computers. now i wonder why i bought a computer...

BTW, im a CS major. i work for my school on their helpdesk, and work for a major corperation over the summer. i know how to program in C++ but prefer to have a more hands on experiance, rather than typing code from 9-5

You are preaching to the choir brotha. I didn't like the architect role for the stint that I did it. Although I still perform the same function, I gave up the title to focus on lab and solution developments. My company has being buying a lot of other companies lately, so I have been real busy with acquisitions and integration designs.

Doward,

As far as certifications goes, the CCIE is not some piece of paper and there are very few dual CCIEs out there in the market. Take a trip to Cisco and have a seat in the CCIE lab for 8 hours and see how your brain feels at the end of the day :) Also note that the lab has a 90% first time fail rate and the average candidate takes 3-4 attempts to pass it at $1250 per attempt. Certifications are simply a tangible measure of ones knowledge and ability for an employer to gauge against predetermined vendor standards. Some carry more weight than others depending on complexity and the skills evaluated. They are not a substitute for a college education or experience. They do compliment a resume and I encourage others to pursue them. Good luck in school.

Chris

I am kind of in the same boat as you with the finish the masters or get another cert/recert, training & knowledge boat. For now i have decided to reobtain my ccna and start working on the ccvp and up route. It will play well into my job and moving up, but like you i am in florida...even worse i am in the florida panhandle in an Ops center for a Cable ISP so i make about 25k less than i would if i were still in ATL.

I was not smart/dedicated enough yet to get an expert level of knowledge back when i had the opportunity and had finished up my ccna and other certs. My roommate who has a CCIE,some Juniper certs, etc for another large voice based company is still in ATL and is making bank by my standards low 100's and he rarely works over 45hrs. He has a HELL of a home lab setup and LOVES his job.

I would hope that south florida has a better payscale than up here. Will your work pay for your Masters and/or your cert training? My HR will only pay for the Masters.

Not possible, you violate 3 laws of physics, 2 laws of quantum mechanics, and one universal truth, in doing that. Now I have to raise the :bsflag:

I kid, I kid. It sounds like you have had a very interesting and productive career.

As for the topic at hand, I had my A+, CCNA, and few other small ones, could program in C, C++, Basic, A little JAVA, and a little python. I was looking down the road at working toward my CCNP. Unfortunately I ran out of funds and decided to join the Navy. Now the government is footing the bill for my scholastic endeavors, yay.

I am in IT as well, glad to see some MKIII people on here that actually like IT work. I work as a Level 3 Help Desk/Network Admin for a real estate and resorts company. Finally working full time employment instead of projects/contracts and on top of all, getting a lot of over time. The sad part is i didn't drive my supra in more than 2 months since I don't have much time.
