Any Clearance Under Back Seats? (Ideas for Subwoofer Location?)

Hey, I've searched around a bit, and peeked through some of the build threads, etc, and I couldn't really tell for sure, so I thought I'd see if any of you had taken out the backseats. I'm assuming that the underbody comes up to make room for the diff/LSD/axle/everything else back there, right under the seats.

What I want is an out-of-the-way place to mount a subwoofer and amp. Unfortunately when I bought them I thought I'd never be using the targa, so I bought a huge 12" Sony sub and one of the most ridiculously big 2-channel amps I've seen (15"x10"x2") I was just planning on sticking in the trunk, but now that I discovered I like taking the targa off, and that the sub box will block the targa, I'd like to find another place to mount it. If there's room under there I'd love to stick it in there, and find some way to ventilate the amp, but iono.

I've considered selling them and looking for a smaller pair, but thats a lot of trouble and I like them. I can't take the spare out cuz its my DD. I'm considering getting a smaller box for the sub but I still don't know if I acn get it small enough to clear the targa holders. And that doesn't leave me anywhere to put the amp. I can't mount it on the back seats, cuz I need the to fold down.

Any ideas? And would be there any room to mount the sub under the rear seats?

Thanks guys!

yes there is some space under the rear seats. no its not going to be enough. i was kicking around the idea of mounting my battery under there (optima red top) and theres just not enough space and im reasonably certain you will need more volume for the sub and amp. you maybe able to mount the amp there or under the pass seat (ala stock) and then i think a custom box would fit under the targa in back if you raised up the peice of plywood some. my bro is running into a similiar problem (DD targa sub)

Thanks.

No way anything would fit under the plywood.
Actually, I'm kinda pissed at myslef about this.
I rushed into it w/o thinking and already cut out a space in the plywod & carpet (both perfect condition prior to that). Now I've screwed them both up and I don't even know if I can get a box to fit back there at all (current box has about .25" clearance from top of box to bottom of hatch, to give you an idea)

So yeah I may decide to go w/ a smaller sub. Why do I need a 12" 1100W sub and amp for a tiny little car that doesn't even have a trunk the sound has to get out of???

Uhhhh, the targa top won't fit w/ the sub there, thats the prob.
And how will the amp fit under the back seats? Theres no way I can ventilate that w/o lots of custom fabbing.

i haven't done it, but a few other poeple have made a false floor and used the spare tire well to mount 1 or even 2 subwoofers.

i, however, just got 2 of these 12" subs:
297394781TS-SW3041D%20Regular.jpg

they're super-low profile (only 3-1/4" deep)

i'm going to build a false floor about 6" off the floor also using the airspace of the tirewell in the enclosure, but i'm going to mount them upfront as close to the front of the car as possible (see drawing below):

hatch_layout.jpg

the reason why i want the subs as far up as possible is because (1) i can space them out how i want and it won't be off-centered where the spare tire well is, and (2) because the further it is away from all the rear panels and trim and licence plate, etc, the less all that stuff rattles so i'll be able to enjoy my music more. using this setup i should have no problem putting the targa in back.

ya that was me, thank you for the compliment :)

it's for an 8" coaxial speaker... i suppose you could put a sub in there, but there is really not enough enclosure volume for one... but check it out :)

Yeah, thats a pretty cool idea, but there really isn't enough volume for a subwoofer there. Plus I can't afford another one, so it would be off balance. Plus, I agree w/ Yellow about space, and I actually do take people back there some.

Now, as for the false floor idea, I like that. How are you spacing it to raise the plywood off that metal supprot where it hinges? And what about theback seats, there would then be a 6" height diff when you fold them. Are you just ignoring that or do you have a solution? I'm really interested in trying that.

Im not an expert at where a sub should go to sound the best. But there is room under the passenger seat. Could it go there and sound good? I have to do some audio soon, Im thinking about building the false floor idea for the back, as long as my targa still fits there. :)

in a hatch car...best placement for a sub would be directed at a 45 degree angle towards the back of the hatch glass.

and get back to me about my last pm!!! :D

you know i sat back there, i'm a big guy and i was fine.... one of the criteria i had when we made those speaker pods is that they didn't stick out too far and that the seats had to fold down still, which they do.

i have more pics here if you want to see them:
http://www.born2drv.com/gallery/interior_exterior

As for the false floor, I'm not using any of the existing hinges or flooring, etc that came with the supra... i'm not even going to use the stock rear hatch panels, right now it's all bare bones back there.

my plan is basically to cover the entire hatch floor in cloth and then fiberglass it so it's airtight. this will also conform to the shape of the spare tire well too using every last bit of airspace.

then i'll build a small frame out of wood that is offset from the floor of the hatch by 6" to make the false floor. It will have the depressions in the pic above so that my battery, amplifiers, etc will all fit flush in the floor (the battery is too tall to sit as is, so i'm going to put it sideways and partially into the right rear tire well. I'll also make 2 round donuts out of wood where i plan to place the 2 subwoofers .... So once I get all the sections in place with the wood frame, i'll stretch over more cloth over the entire thing, fiberglass it and make it airtight again, stick in the subs and i'll be all set :)

i'll probably also sand it down nice and smooth to a nice mirror finish and stretch over more cloth over the rest of the exposed hatch where the hatch panels were, covering them up, making access holes for the rear tail lights incase a bulb blows.

Yeah true Ideal, but thats getting all audiophile-ish lol.

Personally I wouldn't want it under the pass seat cuz then you have it in one ear. Trust me. I have my sub in my room behind me a bit and to the right when I'm at my desk, most of time its great cuz I usually use my laptop on my bed across the room, but when I'm on my desktop it gets kinda annoying.

I'd rather have it centered toward the back of the car, that way its more just "there" and not really directed at you or a specific side or anything.

Hmm, that sounds cool, but its a bit too much work for me (and like I said I need the spare lol)
But, I'm curious how you're gonna ventilate the amps.
I do like the shallow mount sub and the general idea tho, and its not all that expensive. Hmmmmm, Christmas lol.
Oh, yea, and the pics you posted here make the pod look like its a lot bigger than some of them on that link. Looks great!

I'm gonna do some glassing in mine too, but I'm undecided as to whether to glass the area from the front of the targa holders up to the back of the front seats, or if I want to glass in the sides of the hatch (around the wheel-wells). False floor setup with a fiberglassed bottom (to conform to the shape of the bottom of the trunk) is another idea though. I dunno, because I want to go with an eclipse sw9122. They look alot like a JL 13w7 :icon_razz

EDIT:
THIS SUB
powered by
THIS AMP

All-in-all, I'll have $500 into the sub/amp combo :p Working at circuit city has it's perks :D

Also, I've got a set of these speakers custom worked into the stock pods, which will be powered by this amp. Should sound insane :)

EDIT #2:This head unit also :)
