Another Power Steering ? Help!

Steering is very hard.

The resevoir is full, and all the belts are present. However it makes a sound that gets louder in pitch as RPM's go up.

The sound seems like its coming from the belt section.

I did not notice any leaking of fluids of any kind.

Any suggestions? Ive searched and have not been able to find a summative answer.

^^ No, its an 89' I just got it in Oct. No real work, in fact I havent even changed the oil. I did put a Blitz BOV in.

Oh, and CHANGE THE OIL.

Maybe thats it....I took it to Wal-Mart Yesterday and they couldnt change the oil b/c my oil pan is damaged. So, being low on oil, I added a quart. Drove home. This morning is when it started.
So you think the oil has something to do with it?

No, I'm just telling you to change the oil on general principles - no engine likes running on old or low oil, and ours are especially prone to failure from oil woes.

Usually noise in the power steering means low fluid or air in the lines. Check both of those, then check that the proportional steering plug is connected, then check the belt, then consider replacing the pump. Last step is to replace the rack.

High winding pitch.....Bad pump. I'm also in search of knowledge regarding weather the pump for 1jz is the same as the one in 2jz. Tried replacing the oil if it gets better but no luck. Is it wise to use transmission oil for the p/steering? Just wondering if that’s what causes mine to fail. Others says I need an oil cooler.

The pump on the 7m is built for tranny fluid - not sure about the jz series. Works awesome.

Thanks Grim. So what do you think about this oil cooler? Is this also one of the cause of pump failure?

I don't think so. My fluid never gets very hot... and the pump is working the hardest when you are stopped, so there would be no airflow to cool the cooler anyhow.

yea i suggest you bleed the p/s fluid. i am having a similar problem in my supra as well. although i think mine is my lower ball joints that are making the noise...ugh. bleed the system. check the pump. and then if worse comes to worse, the rack.

PS. Grimjack, I noticed you are from Richmond. Maybe I have seen your Supra around, I live there as well. :thumbup:

The winding noise comes and goes but what I notice though that when it's cold you can feel the binding and when the engine start to get hot it gets easy. You would think it’s the other way around if the system indeed need of oil cooler. I just had the rack replaced also but due to that winding noise from the pump, the mechanic is ruling out the rack to be the problem. Bleed? That is new to me...elaborate please.

as i said before, i have something similar. do you feel vibrations when you turn? like underneathe by your feet a little? can you pinpoint where in the engine the sound is coming from?

No vibes just winding from the pump (comes and go) but I believe I can hear it more at incline. Ball joints were all replace also.

lol, yeah I know...just being lazy. I'll do it m'self. But they do a great job with my IS300...

Bleeding is simple - get a buddy to sit outside the engine bay and pour in fluid as needed. Jack up the front end until both wheels are off the ground, with the car as level as possible. Turn the steering lock to lock several times - pausing for a few seconds at each extreme. Drop it back to the ground and do the lock to lock thing a few more times. As long as there is foaming happening in the resevoir, you haven't gotten it all out yet.
