ANOTHER ONE bites the dust

It was a rainy day, a bad day for supras. I just got off work at 7 o'clock and i was driving home. I was on the left lane of a 2 lane road and the 07 camry in front of me decided to slow down at an intersection to make a left. He was stopped on the left lane waiting for incoming traffic to pass. I had no time to cut over. My brakes locked up and i slammed into his rear. I was doing mabye 25 mph. the damage to his car wasn't bad; but, for an 07 camry i'm pretty much fucked here. His bumper is salvagable but i cant say the same for his bumper support. My upper bumper is dented, my d/s headlight is shattered, my d/s fender is messed up, the d/s headlight ass., so is my bumper support and possibly the hood. :cry: After the police report was filed we decided to settle this w/o the insurance company. My supra is the least of my worries. I'm worried about paying off this dude with the 07 camry.
Some people say that a 17 year old shouldn't be driving a supra. In my situation today this was proven correct, and i agree. However, I've been driving it perfectly well and was very gentle with it because i built it myself and didn't want any malfunctions to occur. Accidents do happen. I drive rather defensively; regardless, i admit that i'm still a novice driver and have a lot to learn. I guess this is one of my learning experiences.
I'f you'd like to paypal me some money to help me out pay off this debt to the guy with the camry i'd appreciate it. haha, nah im just kidding. I'm gonna try to settle this without my parents. Sigh.... tough break for me.

Im impressed...a 17 yo that can take responsibility for his actions. Your wrong...you sound responsible enough for the car and everyone makes mistakes. Hope you dont get screwed too bad paying for his car and that your car is back on the road soon.

I gurantee most people your age (and mine for that matter, 18) will rarely admit to things like these, it shows quite a bit of character.

thanks for keeping my hopes up and keepimg me encouraged. My supra is still on the road. I have a parts car (what a good investment). Working @ $7 an hour at jiffy lube which is 30 mins on the highway from my house is gonna make paying off this camry hell. Hopefully the estimate isn't gonna be that bad. I'd say in 5-7 paychecks and thats being optimistic.

I rear-ended a corolla in my mom's Odyssey back in the day doing about 10 kmph. That was about ~180 dollars in damage to my mom's car and the damage was much worse for me. (Big dent) Don't know if that helps with any estimates as to how much you are gonna have to pay.

As for driving fast cars when 17, I've been working on my supra since I was 16 (before I could drive on roads.) I was lucky in that my car has been in the garage constantly since then so I never had the chance to kill myself. However, it's all about how you drive. I drove stupidly in my dad's BMW, but got lucky because of my immense driving skill *cough*. If you drive carefully and learn from mistakes then you should avoid the big accidents (hopefully.)

I got my NA Supra when I turned 16, and I have never caused any accidents, but I have been hit twice...go figure.

And it sounds like the damage to your car wasn't that bad...hopefully it will be fixed and perfect soon enough...good thing you have a parts car...I didn't have that luxury, and drove my car with all the damage from being rear-ended and hit in the front for over a year. Tough break for me too.

age 17, and ive already had my car totaled two or three times. had a kid make a left turn to the middle of nowhere and i had to hit a street sign to avoid him on my left and a phone pole on my right.

another time a tree fell (high winds) perfect timing, demolished my front bumper and cracked the windshield (i was doin around 50)

very first crash though, flipped an old 86 mazda. walked away from it.

give it a night, youll be feelin better in the morning. ive had to spend a shit-ton of money to keep the supra working, and every time something else would happen to it. lesson learned.

I also work about 30 minutes from my house, but I make 9.50 an hour...
7 bucks is weakkkkk.
7.75 is our minimum here in washington...

Gotta say, You may have to pay, and it may hurt, but at least you'll learn. My best friend growing up bought a camaro at the fine age of 17 and three months later was buried because he worst mistake was his only one. I'm glad you're only hurting in pride and wallet. And good luck

dont feel too bad, rear ends can happen. I cant say that mine was a good situation. just got it and it had bald tires. came around a corner to fast, lost traction, and spun out off the road into a tree. hit drivers side door bent it in almost 2 feet. and rolled it. i walked away without a scratch, but i could have been killed.
shit happens and you cant do anything about it. the no insurance company thing was a good idea. your lucky most people wont do that anymore.

I had exactly the same situation as you a few weeks ago.

Was driving pleasantly along at about 40km/h in rush hour traffic when the blue Toyota Echo in front of me decides to slam on their brakes and put on the turn signal after coming to the stop. Needless to say what happened as I attempted to stop the car.

The Echo's suspension was on the ground with a good $7000 worth of body work to be done to pull the trunk/entire left fender back out. The supra? Not a scratch. Got a serious WTF from the cop and the woman driving the Echo.

Here in BC insurance is very cheap compared to the rest of Canada (Government endorsed insurance companies for the win), so I went that route anyway.....

How did you hit the guy exactly? were you following too close? Did he try to make a turn where he wasn't supposed to? Were you not paying attention?

If you're only driving 25mph you shouldn't have trouble stopping even in the rain.
Don't take this as condescending but I'm trying to figure how you hit him.

When I was 17 I had to drive in the ice. My buddies and I would go out and be stupid in it, spinning out of control and what not. That actually made me a better driver learning how to get out of some really bad situations. Learn what you can because it's not always you that is inexperienced.You should try riding a motorcycle, now that's fun with the other crazy people.

I got my first car a 63 rambler station wagon, my mom only let my older friends drive it. On one particular camping trip I drove out near hemet which back then was major BFE, and im driving along and my buddy says Rick you just ran a stop sign, I said no way dude, I looked in my mirror and sure as crap I did run a stop sign. That blew me away so bad that I told my mom about it and she knew right there I had learned a major lesson and took responsibility for it. A few years later I was driving someone else car in the rain doing the speed limit 55, when I started doing 360's in the fast lane, I hit another car, pulled over we exchanged info, and the lesson I learned from that accident 27 years ago was. I always buy the top of the line goodyear rain tires for those few days a year that I might need them. Any tire is decent on dry pavement, but damn when it rains and you need to stop, there really isnt any substitute for goodyear rain tires. Besides the way I see it the only thing between your ass and the road is your tires, go cheap anywhere but never go cheap on tires. My tires have saved me many times over the years just because they were rain tires. So I am sure you can see this after your accident also, and I want to say like the rest of the folks here, it's pretty unusual for people to take responsiblity of thier own actions and work hard in the future to prevent them from happening again. Every time i get a new car i like to take it to an autocross event to see its limits like when it will spin how good it really stops and other things. By doing this have saved my car so many times. That and i had my dads best friend whos been racing stock cars/moddifids ect. for the last 30 years take me out and teach me how to drive fast safley what to do in a spin ect.

I agree with Supra geezer...tires are very important in the rain...on my non-ABS NA Supra, I almost rear ended people on a few occasions, because I just couldn't stop! You hit the brakes, and it almost like you didn't push the pedal at all (my tires were old and hard performace tires)...I almost slid into the curb while making a left turn at an intersection several times, and I wasn't even going fast...same speed as everyone else...I learned my lesson...don't drive the Supra in the rain :biglaugh:.

the estimate for the camry came out to 4k. it turns out i didnt hit the bumper, instead the chassis is banged up. I have no choice but to go through insurance.
