When you put the timing belt on did you aline the cam gears with the mark on the timing belt back cover?

Yes sir,

I was just searching threads related to backfire, and I found one very similar to mine and then it just dead ends....the guy never came back and said what the fix was or anything, I hate that!:3d_frown:

The crank and the cams are at 0 right now. Would I need to pull the cps and adjust that? Not even sure what I would be adjusting though honestly....

With the crank at 0 and cams pointing staight up, follow the TSRM prodedure for installing the CPS.

To set ignition timing (the 10 degrees you're asking about) clamp a timing light pickup to the #1 plug wire and point it at the crank/timing cover indicator while idling the engine with TE1 and E1 jumped in the diagnostic block. With the CPS bolt in, but not tight, turn it slowly in whatever direction makes the tick on the pulley line up with the 10 tick on the timing cover. Tighten the CPS bolt, remove the jumper... you're done.

I basically just restated what was in the manual... maybe it helped though...

Thanks, I needed the "barney" version of that. But one question.....since my engine wont start how will I be able to check that timing to set it to 10*?

I will take the cps out and put it back in, just to make sure. But would that keep it from starting?

Okay, I took the cps out and turned the crank until I seen the cam lobe in the oil filler cap and then put the cps back in....it started!

But, I heard the most awful noise I could imagine, it sounded like metal on metal, so I immediately turned the car off, I mean like it was on for less than a second. What in the world could I have done? Im afraid to even try to start it now:3d_frown:

Well, I found out what the "metal on metal" sound was. I left the ratchet on the crank bolt when I started it, and it was hitting something down there. I found it this morning. I guess sometimes you just need to sleep on it.:biglaugh: Well, after removing the ratchet, it started just fine and it idles pretty crappy, so Im gonna check the timing today, and hopefully everything turns out fine.

That's something I would do. Glad it wasn't something more serious.:icon_bigg

It should run at whatever timing you wind up with when you 1st install the CPS. It probably will be a little rough, once you get it in the proper 10 degree range it should (well, mine has always since nothing else on my car is ever messed up) smooth right out and be at the correct RPM.

You should always be checking the engine compartment for tools before you even crank it over, you're lucky that ratchet didn't smash the shit out of everything in its range... although I don't know how closely you've inspected it.

Well, I checked for everything that it couldve it, and everything is fine. I think it just hit my sway bar is all. No leaky radiator or anything. Right now my knock sensor code is retarding my timing everytime it runs so I gotta fix that.

With TE1 and E1 jumped (for the purpose of setting ignition timing) no correction is being made by the ECU.

I havent done that yet....

So far I aligned the cam gears and crank at 0. Then started it and it threw the code 52 and now it retarded my timing.

Even if I jumped the terminals, when I removed them, wouldnt it retard my timing when the ECU threw the code 52?

Sorry, still learning here. ;)
