Analysis of the Strange Noise.

First ?, does anyone have a sound clip of the turbo 'death whine'? When I am under acceleration and my boost gauge begins to jump up, at about 3,000-3,500 RPM and my boost gauge at about +0 - +.5 PSI, I hear a noise that sounds exactly like chair legs being scooted across a tile floor. I'm not sure, I've heard some descriptions of the death whine sound, but mine doesn't sound like cats being thrown in the turbine.

The sound will go away when I get on it; it kinda seems like something is getting 'stuck', and when I give it a little more throttle, it comes 'unstuck' and goes away. This happens in all gears.

Stumped. And I have searched, but nothing quite matches this sound. As far as I can tell, I am still getting a normal amount of boost, and I don't feel the car lose any acceleration when the mystery noise occurs.

Any help or ideas would be much appreciated, as always.

Check your power steering fluid level. That could cause a sound similar to that. Good luck!

Check. All fluid levels full. It used to happen very sporadically, but now I can get it to do it just about all the time.

Can you make the sound when the car is not moving?

No, this happens only when under acceleration and right when my boost is kicking in. It doesn't really seem to make it until i get into boost; I can take off and accelerate nice and easy and it will not make it whatsoever.

Hmm, the only other thing I can think of off hand would be the belts.

Also, is the sound loud enough that a vid camera would pic it up? If so then would you be able to get a sound clip of it?

I'll try. Thanks for your advice, chambers. If there's anyone else that might have any idea, I appreciate it!

A sound clip of the death whine anybody?

Someone else's whine may or may not rule out death whine on your car. But, if you made a clip of the actual noise in question, I bet you'd have at least 3 people who could explain it.

Could it be in the tranny? Have you checked the fluid in it? It sounds to me thru your description that it must be something rotating, that gets enough tension on it to smooth it out once you get past a certain point. Now,for rotating, it could be the spindle of the turbo, belts, pulleys, driveshaft, tranny/clutch, differential, and hopefully not engine internals.
