I'm ordering a new one from Toyota for my '89 "freshen up" today.

I'll post pics of the impeller by late in the week. (It BETTER be the STAMPED AISIN impeller!)

Buddy of mine had repeated overheating problem, which seemed impossible to determine cause and solution. After many attempts at resolution, a simple switch of aftermarket to Toyota pump was like magic, voila, problem disappeared.

you are being picky... the toyota one is not that much bigger, and it has thinner blades. that would mean it wouldn't push as much. or you can do what i did and weld a plate on it to make it push even more.

Did you notice any difference with the Anti-Cavitation plate, like a more stable temp over all, and what I always wondered did it cause the air bubbles that get trapped to be flushed out quicker from the increased water flow? You should keep us posted on this I always wondered if in the long run this would help stop hot spots in the block cooling.

which part number is it? I'm seeing 2 different part numbers for the water pump with different prices (but covering the same years)

maybe one is the cheaper cast impeller and one is the better stamped one?

16100-49805-83

16100-49776

supposedly the bottom one is for the turbo model, but I don't see why there would be a difference...

My shop said FOUR numbers! I'll check WHICH one I get, and post the number if it's the STAMPED impeller...

^^^ This part number WAS the AISIN original replacement pump WITH the STAMPED impeller in my case.:icon_razz

I will post some PICS later... (if I get a chance during work... otherwise tonight or over the weekend...)

My water pump fins broke off, i was going to my g/f house to go meet her parents(not good).I was just driving normal. There were some slow ass people in front of me,so i gave it some gas. Then my battery light came on and my ebrake light and yeah. I was oh shit my belt.
It was not the belt. I had just replaced the water pump when i replaced the hg.
When my fins broke off in my water pump, it made my fan hit my radiator and that was that.
i was stuck on the side of some backroad, i called my buddys to bring me my old water pump and my old belt, but when i when to pry the new water pump, i was like not good. Got it back together and my radiator was shooting water , drove like that for 30 miles. Got home and that was the end of it.

The thing i don't get is my water pump had rust all over the place, it was 4 months old?

WOW!:aigo:

I'm guessing your BHG caused "more damage" than realized... such as a "CRACK" (possibly hairline) in the head, etc... OR the new HG hasn't solved your "blowby" into the waterjacket... and you are blowing BOOST into the coolant passages... OR... there is a BREECH of the waterjacket through a crack or something somewhere on the EXHAUST manifold side and HOT EXHAUST gasses are being BLOWN into your water passages... causing the coolant to both evaporate and/or overheating the impeller. (Perhaps repeated heat/cooling cycles to the "pot-metal" cast impeller compromised it's metallurgical stability and ultimately weakened it to the point of catastrophic failure...)

...anyway... doesn't look too good... I'd wanna KNOW what happened so I could make sure I fixed it before putting it back on the road...

(That's the best "guess" I can come up with from your explanation above...)

Any other thoughts out there?

^^^ STAMPED impeller by AISIN... you can see some "die shear" on some fins even though it was probably "deburred" during production... so I took a Dremel tool to the sharp edges and "polished" them just enough to remove the rough spots and eliminate parasitic turbulence from the eddy swirls of coolant being manipulated by the blades...

...I also noted the TERRIBLE condition of some of the stock fasteners... so I converted to a STUD + NUT joint design (much better JOINT DESIGN) with parts I had laying around the garage... and used DACROMET coated nuts for better corrosion resistance. (The "Yellow Chromate" bolts are the "old style" hexavalent chromate containing MFZn2-C surface treatment... which is now all changed to TRIVALENT chromes by law... but no matter...)

Job complete! NO LEAKS!:biglaugh:

There looks like an awful lot of rust in there if you were using Toyota red coolant... I'm thinking electrolosis maybe?

I got to thinking about it some more... and now I suspect it was residual RUST caused back when the HG blew... ???

When the water pump failed, the fan hit the radiator and thats why ... my hg whent bye..bye. Also when it overheated i drove it for 30 miles home and my head got cracked next to an exhaust valve. I'm sure the impeller fins broke because it was a cheap ass water pump. But i don't know about the rust, i think it was because of the fins.
