When I hit the brake pedal the dash lights dim slightly and rpms fall maybe 100. I think a more powerful alternator would fix it.

Nope.
the age of the cars is starting to degrade most of the ground paths. SO address the ground path and more than likely it will fix your light gauge dimming issue.
