Alright guys, due to the recent negative reviews I have decided not to source my replacement 7M from RabidChimp

Does anyone else know of someone that sells rebuilt longblocks?

Alternatively, I am seriously considering spending a little more coin and getting a new short block / cylinder head from Toyota. If I were to do that and wanted to put it together with a MHG and ARP studs, what thickness MHG should I use?

Thanks for any and all suggestions/critisims

The fact that I am currently a full time student that uses the Supra for everyday transportation, minimizing downtime is important for me. I guess I could do a leak down test and a few other things and try to determine exactly what I am looking at. I know for a fact that the compression on cylinders 3-6 is between 140-150 psi, cylinder 2 is at about 120 psi, and cylinder 1 is at a whopping 30 psi of compression, when we added a little bit of oil to the cylinder the compression did not really change on cylidner 2, and cylidner 1 went up to just under 40 psi of compression.

In my limited knowledge its gotta be a scored cylinder wall or a blown headgasket, but I dont really have any of the signs of a BHG

Make sure you get all your prices first, including the gasket overhaul set from Toyota, even though you are going MHG. A new short block and head for a street build is not bad idea at all. I would't do it if you are planning on pushing heavy power.

It has been awhile, but I think an overhaul with parts and labor at Toyota would have run about $4500.

Toyota no longer sells new cylinder heads for the MK3 Supra. They discontinued them 2 years ago. You have to get this from Jarco or some other Japanese seller of shortblocks.

what thickness MHG should I use?

It's the machine shop that should decide this on a used engine. If this is going to be rebuilt/new engine, 2.0mm seems to be the consensus. I have a 2.0mm HKS MHG -- get a Stopper Type gasket, they are the best.

No one knows until tests are done. I bet it's a BHG if it was never replaced or the bolts retorqued. With the head gasket for the MK3, it's not if but when the original head gasket will go.

To use a MHG you will have to deck (machine) both the block and head surfaces to the RA spec for the MHG used...30 RA for the HKS & Greddy; 50 RA for a Cometic. This is on any stock block and/or head. The front plate will need to be machined as well to match the block surface height. Depending on the MHG, you may have to remove rivets holding it together...any rivet that contacts the head or block surface needs to be removed. Just make sure you read the instructions that come with the MHG or go to the company website.

Have the machine shop test the head for hardness...if it is annealed, it is pretty much useless. DO NOT use spray sealer on a new MHG...it will damage the factory coating designed to effect the initial seal.

Thickness wise, it depends on how much material is removed form the block and head surface. A stock HG is ~1.3mm thick....there is .040" to 1mm...if you remove .005" from each, that is a total of .010" removed for .25mm. Add to 1.3mm and you get 1.55mm...use a 1.5mm or 1.6mm thick MHG in this example and you're good to go.

Make very sure you follow the torque spec (it comes in the package) for the ARP studs or bolts. Follow the TRSM bolt pattern and work your way up using multiple passes in 10-15 ft/lb increments. ARP bolts have a 75 ft/lb max for an aluminum head like ours. DO NOT over torque!

Since you got the motor apart anyway, I'd check/replace the rod and main bearings. I'd also replace the seals for the crank and cams. Reseal the oil pan using FIPG.

Champion Toyota still has a short block listed at $2,200 and a cylinder head listed at just over $1,000

Wow Mike Cothren in 2004 at Champion Toyota (he is still there), told me the cylinder head was discontinued.

IN your case, I'd suggest finding a 7M with a BHG that you can rebuild in your spare time, or pick up a JDM 7M, and do the same.

Yep! Cause if you read what I posted above, you're just about going to rebuild it anyway...that is unless you buy the Toyota short block & head. You'll still need to get the block/head lapped for the proper RA spec for a MHG ;)
