Hey guys hoping someone can help me out here. Me an my brother both own supras and now my girlfriend has decided to get one. She is buying an 89 turbo, but I was really hoping we could find her a 90+ so she would have airbags. I was wondering if it is possibly to put airbags in an 89? If you were to purchase an airbag steering wheel, and impact sensors could you convert it? Thanks guys

airbags save 1 person out of every 1000 crashes, and hurt 4.

Sure you want it?

Also, it would be possible to add airbags.. but it would be VERY difficult to do so.

I did a project on airbag systems for automobiles and had this info.
Since 1990, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recorded 175 fatalities as a result of an air bag deployment. To date, 104 of these deaths have been children, while the remaining 71 have been adults. With more than 3.3 million air bag deployments and more than 6,377 lives saved and countless injuries prevented, the benefits of air bags are dramatic.

An airbag manufactured 15 yrs ago could be unsafe as the technology isn't nearly as developed as it is today. You can find a whole lot more info just searching google. If you're set on having an airbag just buy a supra that has one. I'm sure one can be found with some patience.

the airbags in our cars are gen 1...and they HURT LIKE HELL from what I understand...

wear your seatbelt properly and you'll be fine...supra is a tank and doesn't like to deform the passenger cabin greatly protecting them.

i can vouch for this. i had a reasonable accident where i was hit on the passanger side at a relatively low speed. the airbag went off and i suffered the worst injuries because of it out of the 3 people in the car (including my roomie who was in the back seat not wearing a seatbelt on the pass side) my bros "new" car is an 88 supra w/o airbag while mine is a 91 where i am thinking about pulling the airbag.

bottom line, knowing what i know now id go without
