I decided against this. i didn't like where the aftermarket filter would be sitting. right next to the radiator and fan. For now i'll stick with stock and when i have some time off work i'll figure something out.

There are "shields" you can buy that direct the airflow away from those heat sources and towards the inlet at the front. I have a K&N cone filter, but without the shield.

Apexi is a better filter.

Stay away from oiled filters. They will ruin the afm.

Can you use some aluminium or some plastic and make your own.

Also arc makes nice boxes but I don't think for the mk3. You could prolly mod a mk4 one to fit tho.

i was going to get some aluminium sheets, give them a few coats of heat resistant paint and make a housing similar to the one that is already there. Also, is MAF cleaner safe to use on the AFM?

That is true, if you over oil it and don't allow sufficient time to dry. ANY type of liquid can damage the AFM, including rain... That's why Injen offers a hydro shield. I've always been a K&N user on all my cars and have never had an issue. If you have an issue with a K&N, it's most likely user error.

No, it's not. And don't put an oiled gauze filter on your car. They're crap and anyone who knows the slightest thing about filtration science, has seen the independent test data, understands how engines actually work, and isn't dumb enough to fall for K&N's marketing BS knows they're crap...

Umm ya. If you run the hydro shield with a oiled k&n the oil can still get to the afm. It's basically a filter for the filter incase of large puddles.

The Apexi power intake takes a lot for water to get through. Also after about 65k miles when mine came out still looked brand new inside.

Also the aem dry flow filters are awesome as well which is what I'm using now.

K&n filtration sucks its just hype that makes it sell.

Of course, the hydro shield is on the outside, not inside the filter :) I was simply pointing out any liquid can damage the AFM.

If Apexi filters are so much better, I might just have to pick one up. Seems a lot of people are more favorable towards those.

Pleated paper shits all over any other filtration media. It's cheap and very forgiving and the way good paper filters are made, has far more surface area than "add 50hp, super race" filters.
Considering the biggest restriction in the intake system on a fairly stock Supra is the AFM (0n both turbo and non turbo) why waste your money?

Several of the freon solvents are effective and safe but unfortunately they're hard to come by these days. For cleaning, remove the electronics and wipe the Karman pillar with a dry cloth. Make sure the pressure sensing holes are clear but other than that leave it alone. While its out clean the plumbing with anything you want.

Filters: What Typhoon said. A paper filter will flow all the air the engine needs. Filters are rarely the limiting factor in an induction system, something that can be easily checked with a manometer. Remember, flow only matters at WOT. Otherwise there's always a restriction in the system...it's called the throttle plate.
