After i talked with phil of adrenaline motorsports, i have decided that i am going to put the Mk3 into early hibernation and take it out later. he said realistically i can get a fully running 1jz from him for 4-5k cdn. just enough if it goes away for 4 months. THis will be my first ascension to building a reliable MK3.

Lets see, spend 4 to 5 thousand on a stock engine, because you can save money not fixing the one that wasnt taken care of in the first place.

Good call.

Sounds like a plan. 1JZ's are great engines. I hope that your 7M's reliability problems were the previous owners fault and not yours. :)

Good luck with the swap, I hope to see many pics! :D

In canadian dollars, not sure how much it is.

Anyway, just think of how much it would cost to fix a blown 7M, + convert it to a more technologicly advanced/designed engine such as the 1JZ or 2JZ. NegativeGeforce spent nearly $1000 just converting his car to FFIM on his 7M. No more intercooler pipes running over your engine, and no more taking a shit load of things off just to check your spark plugs. Less of a worry about rod knock or head gasket problems. The 1JZ is a fantastic value, especially when you compare it to rebuilding a blown 7m, rebuilds are not cheap.

Definately not my fault. Previous owner didn't like checking his oil. YEah i know it may be betrayal to most of you but i want an engine that will stay in this car without problems for most part. Im gonna try MK3 for life but it would be very hard to do it with a 7m. I check oil everyday btw ;)

1jz for reliability

hopefully it is better taken care of then the 7m ;)

Reliability is ultimately the owners responsobility NOT the engine ;)

1jz, 7m, 350 SBC, 500 BB mountain motor....if the owner don't take care of them. They WILL break and be "unreliable".

195,000 miles of 7m reliability here :p

Defend them all you want, but in the homeland of Japan, Toyota themselves gave up on the 7M-GTE in the summer of 1990. Nothing further has changed since then, and hundreds of thousands of 1J's now reliably travel the earth.

great here we go.

don't play the number game as 100x the 7m and breathen where running the world.. and what did HKS use for their drag motor???

and to nitpick some more

which would i preffer.

A zero mile engine or a used engine of unknowm mileage and history......hmmmm. that is a tough question

Is there really that much difference?
(I know FA about the JZ series price wise)

1j Supra clip is $2200-3000 whereas a 2j & 6 speed is around $5500.

After you buy the 2j you spend more money picking up the bits & peices to finish the installation.

My prices may be off as I going off of memory

Can't see the sense in spending 3K on a used motor....

Surely people don't just drop em in without a freshen up?

Guess my point is why not spend the $$$ rebuilding the 7M right rather than take a chance on another used motor that may not have been taken care of?

When I had my Toyota 4v V8 I bought a few motors for spares and I know JDM are usually only 30>40.000 KM's but all of these motors looked like they had never had an oil change in that time :(.

I just had to make the same decision, & I'm rebuilding a 7M. After thinking over both options (rebuilt 7m or used 1j), I decided that I would have to rebuild the 1j too because of my perfectionistic ways, so why not just stick with a 7m.

Agreed. I will be making this decision in the early spring. I plan on taking my time with a rebuild and doing everything correctly with all brand new parts and expect to drop it in at the beginning of the following spring. I don't know much about the 1J, but my main concern is that there are less parts readily available. It seems that there is more parts for the 7m to make it a stronger engine than the 1J for about the same price or a bit more. Please correct me if Im wrong.
