But if you know that it generates revenue for the forum you use, you should click it anyways.

Most ads dont generate unless you buy stuff or sign up or whatever. I didnt think many places paid just for clicks anymore?

You have done an awesome job keeping it unobtrusive... (Ie-the way it is now).

Thanks, that was my goal. Effective placement without being a royal pain in the ass or distracting from the main content.

Looks great now. If it weren't for this thread, I doubt I'd of noticed anything was different.

I'd be fine with even more. I know running this place can't be cheap. I value SM very much and would be willing to hunt through ads all over if I had to.

Thanks for making it all possible, SC. :)

Not going to happen. I just can't stand sites that have ads all over the place. I think this is about all the ad I can stand.

You're welcome, but there are a whole lot of people besides me who make this place possible. First and foremost the staff who work very hard for no pay. They deserve a pat on the back. And all of you folks too. Without you there's no content.

It doesnt bother me too much, but I'd rather see some donations pay for the site, then ad dollars.

gotten any donations recently mike?

as long as they're not the animated ads that take forever to load and jack with the page I'm fine...

those are blocked by my ad-blocker, but still...

I don't mind it's placement, I noticed it right away, but it blends in and isn't very large, so no problem here though I do agree on the donations think that CK said...

I do get the occasional donation, which is always greatly appreciated. (I still have a "thank you" page in mind for everyone who ever has. It's just finding the time...)

But with some of the grief that I got in the past over donations, I tend to shy away from asking for them these days.

I'm curious, how much does the bandwidth cost?

That's not really an easy question to answer. I run a hosting company (which is why SM gets this kick ass server without getting a bill for it) so SM simply eats up bandwidth that I have available for my clients and generally adds to the overal load on my systems. SM is measurable, but by no means the only thing that makes me have to upgrade equipment, connections, etc.

But to somewhat answer what you asked, in general, bulk bandwidth (over 200 Mbps) runs about $45 per month per Mbps. A 1 Mbps connection allows the transfer of approximately 340 Gb of data over a 30 day period. I (and most ISP's) use the 95th percentile method over the course of a month. We take samplings at 5 minute intervals and discard the top 5 percent of the samplings (approximately 35 hours per month) and bill for the used bandwidth via that method.

SM has the ability to stream 100 Mbps, but I never has (and never will - because it's throttled - 100 Mbps continual would run about $4500 a month in bandwidth...).

SM's hosting bill would be considerable if it were just paid for.

I liked the little pledge drive we had in the past, wasn't that for upgrading forum software or something? I was quite surprised by the number of "cheap" mk3 owners that donated a few bucks to keep SM going strong. It was good to see people willing to support the community.

If you want to do it again, is it possible to set up a Supramania paypal to donate too? then you don't run a similar risk to having your personal paypal account rep damaged.

Regardless, every paypal account has to get tied to a real bank account or credit card at some point.

Things are going ok. I'm not sweating it, so you guys shouldn't either.
