Add an extra qt?

I have read in a few different postings that people are adding an extra quart of oil when doing an oil change. What is the purpose of the extra oil, is there an oil starvation problem when cornering or braking? Under acceleration logic would suggest that the oil would be forced rearward to the sump providing ample supply for the pump. Are there any Supras using a dry sump system?

Without a windage tray won't this extra oil create a loss of HP because of parasitic drag of the oil on the crank?

Just wondering...

The problem is sustained cornering or braking...if the oil is at the lower range of the dipstick, you can uncover the pick-up. Not good...+1 quart is "insurance" and is no where near the crank when you actually measure pan capacity.

yep, i have always run an extra quart of oil, even with my new setup i plan on doing so.

I run 5.5-6qts rememeber we have an turbo, oil cooler and lines which also take oil to fill up when the oil leaves the pan it has a nice trip before it get back to the pan.......

Marc - Actually I'm running more than that...closer to 7 quarts. I also have a bigger oil cooler and remote filter with twice the capacity. When I get my new pan, it will be almost 9 quarts

What I do is fill with oil till it reaches the top mark on the dipstick, then add a quart. The level it reaches on the stick becomes my new full mark.

Sorry to go a bit off topic, but i was looking at buying a 78 Porsche once and was told it takes 13 quarts. Most of that's in the lines running from the back of the car from the motor, to the oil cooler up front, and then back to the motor...now THAT's an expensive oil change...

...and i plan to run 6 in mine whenever it returns.

If I do a full change and flush the Cooler circuit it's 12 qts and I use Synthetic so quite a few $$$

To be honest with you, ive never thought of adding an extra QT. and from what im reading it seems like a good idea ! im glad this came up for me to read cuzz i will do that with the built motor i have goin on
