I was wondering what everybody knows about the whole "we were forwarded your application to other UC schools and you've been accepted to our school" deal....

I applied to Davis, UCLA, Berkeley, and got rejected, but UC Merced and UC Riverside accepted me....when i didnt apply. i'm wondering if they really did accept me based on merit or what...

are they good schools? should i think about going there? if i did it would be in a scientific field (probably engineering, and probably mechanical)

also, what do you guys know about Colorado School of Mines? i got accepted there but its kinda far from me so i decided not to register (i'm in cali). i didnt do anything buy submit my details to them, and basic details at that. no essay...no fee....their "golden scholar" app got me in...

i'm pretty sure i'm just going to stay local and save money..then transfer, but i thought i'd poke around and see whats up with my possibilities right now...

usually when you apply to a school system (UCLA, Texas, Temple, Penn State) if you dont get into the main campus you usually get automatically applied to a satellite school

Colorado School of Mines is a great school, but its incredibly intense. I considered that, but chose Boulder instead. The kids at Mines tend to be very school focused. If you want a very focused education and a challenge, I'd say Mines would be good, but if you want to sit back and enjoy your college years I wouldn't even think about.

2 cents from a semi-local. :)

thanks a lot for that...i heard its "ritzy" and i dont really like that demographic...

i like school....but i want a life. and i dont want to become a prick or be around them. (unavoidable...but why go toward the swarms? lol)

what college are you going to? just...boulder college? what are you studying? i was thinking of applying to South Dakota School of Mines, because theres a student (alumni) that has been there a few years in mining engineering and management...his pay is planned to start upwards of $80k...... and that was tempting. its just so damn far away.

I go to the University of Colorado at Boulder and I'm a sophomore in Mechanical Engineering. If you want to make 80k right out of school, you're gonna have to kick some ass at a major university or go to a high-end school. I plan on making around 50k, but I'm still two years away, so who knows?

Most the "school of mines" places I checked into were a little too..... uh....... well..... "focused". I want a good education, but I also want to enjoy my time at college. I may end up doing the master's program here if I can keep the GPA above 3.25(currently at 3.6, woo-hoo!). Like most places, they have a BA-MA program that allows you to get a master and bachelors in 5 years total.

Anyways... I'd say if you want a great start to a career then give the more "hardcore" schools a shot and see how you like it. I know a few kids that ended up at CSM(co. school of mines) and they don't really like the school, but they love knowing that they're getting a top-notch education and that they're going to be rolling in money when they get out.

And as someone from UTI said, it's all about how much you put in. You can get a great education most anywhere. The School of Mines will just FORCE you to work much harder. You can get a 4.0 at any school and be in good shape if they have a decent career services department.
