You are getting rid of your A/C because you don't have a belt?

The compressor comes off with 4 bolts. The hoses disconnect before the firewall and on the compressor. Remove the reciever/dryer from the front of the car near the radiator. It looks like a mini water heater with a sight glass on top. It is cylindrical if you don't know what a water heater looks like. The condensor when removed will increase airflow to the radiator greatly. The weight reduction and cooling benifit are two good reasons to delete the A/C.

It isn't very hard to do.

Why does everyone remove it when it doesn't work? Why not just fix it?

What a concept ;)

Like Jeff I'd fix it too, otherwise Nick's advice is solid. Recover any refrigerant if you can and keep all the parts together in case you decide to one day reinstall it or sell the car. I'd plug or bag everything to keep the moisture out too. If the time comes you'll need a new receiver/dryer. You should also drain, flush, and refill the compressor (assuming it's good) with oil.

my A/C never worked. i've never owned a car with A/C. i knew i'd be building my car to be a street beast, and chopping all the weight i could while still being able to put it back to stock if i'd like. :)

i didn't want A/C, as it's not my daily driver. i love driving with the windows down. as everyone said, if you're pulling it because it's broken, that's a big mistake. if you're pulling it because you don't want it, then do it.

i bagged up everything individually, and sealed it up very well. then put it all in a large tupperware container, and bagged that, should i ever want to put the A/C back in. the only thing left in my car that is A/C related are a few wires which are hidden, and the button on the climate control that says A/C. (i pulled everything, including the evaporator, which is in the ducting with the heater core)

Alright Nick and Jet Jock...., You two always come through for me when I'm in a lame crunch. The ac works. The buttons on the dash have to be finger f ucked into working. But I'm dumping it because I don't want to it lugging the engine down.

I'll sell the unit to someone who doesn't have ac and wants it. I don't drive with ac and therefore there is just no need to carry it around. Thanks heaps Gents.

If the AC really lugged the engine down that much, Why dont manufacturers make a new AC design for all cars?

I mean unless you are REALLY trying to lighten your car and such....

That's the reason why I'm getting rid of mine. It never gets so hot that I NEED it here in Colorado. Plus our windows are friggin huge, so the car usually cools down quickly as long as I am moving. Parking in the shade helps alot to.

Watsup slideways. The AC unit never really was a henderance. I'm just trying to get as much out of the car as I can hp and weight reduction wise.
I don't use it as a rule unless the old lady is riding with me. It does drink more gas blowing the cold air though. I'm looking for efficiency.

If your engine is lugging with A/C, you lost the signal to the ECU indicating A/C operation. That often induces stalling when stopped.

And you could have a weak engine also. Any car will have a noticable drop in output when the A/C is from the parasitic drag. How bad is another story.
